For less than $50, you get a clean bed, a working fridge, cold air conditioning, a locking door, and a roof. When money’s tight, that’s enough. The showers and toilets are shared, and for that price, it’s fine. Think of the place as a decent hostel. If you can afford somewhere better, you probably wouldn’t stay here. Don’t judge it against other two-star hotels. It’s not one of those, and it’s not a motel or a bed and breakfast either. The owner seems to hope you’ll mistake the dated charm and disrepair for quaintness. The so-called renovation feels like a joke. It’s like crashing with a not-very-close, not-very-clean “friend” who lets you stay for gas money, so you feel you can’t complain. Anyone with allergies should probably avoid it. The bathroom on my floor had black mold, and the shower knob came off in my hand repeatedly. Everything looks shoddily pieced together. The stair treads meant to prevent slipping might actually be slicker than the carpet underneath. Management’s notes are written on corrugated cardboard and stuck up with Scotch tape. This is the most positive three-star review I’ve ever written, but at $50 a night when cash is tight, it’ll do.

The high ceilings and central spot in Blair gave this old-style hotel a lot of charm. It was clean and quiet, and the price was hard to beat. Having the toilet and shower down the hall didn’t bother me when I treated the place like a hostel. I’d even consider staying here instead of somewhere in Omaha.

The old building has very creaky, loud floors, though I did like the high ceilings. My room was tiny, with just a curtain between the bedroom and bathroom and no door, and the shower barely fit an adult. It faced a busy train track across the street. There’s no lot, only street parking, which is a hassle with lots of luggage when the inn is busy. We were lucky enough to double park briefly to unload our bags. Also, check-in was limited to a four-hour window, so keep that in mind if you’re traveling.

I haven’t stayed there yet, but I hear it’s pretty cool. I like the downtown location, and it’s right by Goodwill, lol. What can I say, they have great electronics!

The room was fairly quiet, but that was about the only good part. The shower was gross and couldn’t hold a steady temperature, swinging from freezing to scorching and back within five minutes. The window air conditioner left a 3/4-inch gap at the sill, enough for any bug that wanted to come visit me in bed. As soon as I lay down, the mattress collapsed onto the bed frame. The place felt cobbled together, so the “perfect stay” was anything but.
