The fitness center was nice, but the pool was quite small and there was no hot tub. We weren’t impressed with the restaurant, so we ended up eating dinner at the Embassy Suites down the street every night. It was a much nicer hotel with great food, and we’ll stay there next time we’re in the Twin Cities. This Hyatt disappointed me, especially since I usually choose moderately priced places. Getting from the parking lot to the entrance wasn’t easy, and the lot still had ice and snow. My elderly parents had to climb over snowbanks, and the main entrance is on the other side of the building. The rooms were nice, though the sleek modern look felt less cozy than I’d like. There was plenty of hot water, but no bathroom exhaust fan. I was surprised there wasn’t a microwave in the room, and we had to go up a floor for either a microwave or ice. Only some even-numbered floors had ice, with one machine serving around 100 rooms across two floors.

The bed was comfortable and the view was great, but the room wasn’t particularly clean or in good condition. I was visiting as my mom’s guest because she likes this brand. I’ve told her there are better options for the price, and having stayed at nicer places near MOA, I wouldn’t choose this one again. The lobby was a mess when I arrived after midnight, apparently no one had cleaned up after an event before the bar closed. This was below par for the Hyatt Regency hotels I’ve stayed at.

Caroline and Caleb at the breakfast bar were the one bright spot. They were thoughtful and attentive, and when the raspberry croissants ran out, they offered to make fresh ones just for me. I wish the rest of the service had been like theirs. I never got a call back from whoever was in charge, possibly someone named Jennifer, and she was never at her desk. On my second stay, things went badly: the bedroom TV wouldn’t turn off, and after an hour of trying to fix it, I opened the remote and found mold inside. Mark at the desk seemed unfazed when I called and told me to follow up the next day if I wanted to move rooms. Two days later I was moved, but the new room was worse. The partition between rooms made a loud clunk whenever it opened or shut, and there was no phone. Service was poor overall, and the food was average at best. My first stay in the Regency Suite had been clean, comfortable, and spacious, though the staff then were just average. I stayed twice in April, four days the first time and three days the second, within a two-week period. For a Hyatt Regency, this was far below what I expected. I wouldn’t recommend it unless Caroline and Caleb were running the whole place.

We come back to this Hyatt Regency whenever we visit the Cities and aren’t staying with friends or family. We’ve probably been here a dozen times and expect to return many more. The pool is a favorite for our younger kids, and we also love breakfast at Urbana. The food is delicious and interesting without being too unusual, and even the little ones enjoy it. Staff are consistently friendly and helpful, and it feels like a home away from home. The rooms are nice and fairly fresh, with some fun suites. It’s not super luxe, but it is a full-service hotel, and getting here from the airport is easy by Light Rail, shuttle, or other options.

The room looked cold all night even with the thermostat set to 78, so something there wasn’t working. The sheets had holes, and the soap had been left by the previous guest. There wasn’t anywhere to eat nearby, so you have to head toward the mall, and the hotel bar doesn’t open until late for food. It looks like a nice enough hotel, but I’d be generous giving it two stars.
