We were woken around 5 a.m. by the fire alarm and its bright flashing light. At 71, I didn't know I could jump out of bed that fast. I went for my pants and nearly pulled my CPAP machine off the table because I forgot I was still attached to it. My wife calmly called the desk, which was set up in the makeshift breakfast room. They said a steamy shower had set off the alarm because ventilation was poor. We looked at each other and started laughing. I was just glad I wasn't the naked guy in the shower who had no idea he'd triggered it. The hotel is under construction, including the main entrance, lobby, dining room, and kitchen. Food prep is happening in the pantry. Check the fine print in the gray box. Sometimes the worst hotels give you the story you end up telling and laughing about the most.

We asked for another room because the first one had two problems: the AC wouldn't turn on, and the door was open when we arrived. The top hinge seemed loose, so it probably hadn't shut all the way. We had to lift the door to close it. The hotel had mentioned renovations on its site, so the construction mess down the hall didn't bother us. The updated room was nice, comfortable, and clean. No harm, no foul.

The room was pretty clean, the beds were comfortable, and having a pet friendly hotel was a plus for us. My dogs barked maybe twice when we came in, but someone complained about them. They weren't barking constantly, especially compared with the people across the hall, who went in and out and slammed their door most of the night. Breakfast was supposed to start at 6:30, but it still wasn't ready at 6:45, so we missed it. Even with those issues, it was a decent stay.

Breakfast and coffee were good, and room 301 was very clean with great AC. The location was great too. The door caught on the frame and took force to shut, making a loud noise. Construction on the second floor didn't bother me, but there were tools and trash all over the stairwells. I found that unsafe and unprofessional, and the stairs were very dirty. That's the only reason I gave four stars instead of five.

The Holiday Inn Express in Suites in Bossier City was one of my best hotel experiences in recent memory. The front desk agents were friendly, and the housekeepers were really nice. They're renovating, but the employees were still very helpful and pleasant. When I'm back in the area, I'd definitely stay here again. Ten stars all around.
