Herring Run Motel

The owners seemed proud of their business and worked hard to help guests have a good trip. I stayed at the Herring Run motel two years ago on a birthday trip to fish at the cape cod canal. Fishing there wasn’t great, but for the price the motel was accommodating, friendly, and fun. There’s a pond behind it that’s good for fishing, and the place has a nice, homey feel. It definitely looks like a fixer upper from the outside. The cottages out back weren’t finished then, so we stayed in the motel section. They were being worked on and looked very nice from outside.

The website had disappeared, and the phone number had no voicemail, so there was no way to contact anyone. We showed up to find the place under construction, with no call or email to cancel our reservation. The construction crew were kind and sent guests to another hotel, but it was full because so many people had been sent there. We tried two more places nearby and ended up having to go a long way away. The owners and new owners hadn’t contacted anyone or cancelled reservations. I wouldn’t recommend booking if the new management won’t help the customers who reserved. A terrible handover, if there even was one.

We arrived at night because of our airline timing and found the place completely under construction. We only learned what was happening after talking with the workers. There’d been no email or call about our room, which we’d paid for in advance, and that money is gone now. Everywhere we called was booked, so we had to scramble to find a place to stay. I wish the old or new owners would sort this out. Edit, 29 Oct 2024: I got the same generic automated reply as other reviewers. The claim that they contacted people is a blatant lie. If you’re the owner, forward the emails you say you sent. You have my address. Send them again. You can’t. Don’t stay here.

Behind the motel there’s a wonderful lake where we kayaked and explored nature. We even spotted a giant turtle. Beautiful beaches were only minutes away, and the grounds were cozy and well lit, nice for a night by the fire or a day grilling. We booked a family vacation at Herring Run, and it was a nature gem that exceeded our expectations. The rooms were spotless, with crisp sheets that smelled so clean. I love that there are affordable places like Herring close to home that still feel like a true escape. I’d give it more stars if I could, highly recommend it!
