Dalem's Chalet

The room smelled strongly of smoke, even though it didn’t feel clean in general. It wasn’t extremely dirty, just not clean. We’d arrived late and were tired from traveling, so I didn’t call about the smell. At checkout the next morning I told the woman, and all she said was sorry. Later I realized I’d left a small blanket there. I’ve called and emailed every day to ask if they found it. She said the cleaning person would come the next day and it might be in storage, and that she’d call me. I’m still waiting, and two emails have gone unanswered. It was the cheapest last-minute place in town, I guess you get what you pay for.

The view is spectacular, and the prices are very reasonable for the area. The place may be a bit dated, but it’s a unique stay. If the dining room is open, try it: the German food is splendid and the atmosphere is unusual. If you’re only there for breakfast, the french toast with real maple syrup is a must-try.

Dalem's has old-world charm and a great spot just outside downtown Brattleboro. My room was roomy and comfortable. I booked for one night, but had an allergic reaction and had to head home. The owner was incredibly kind about refunding me and was most concerned that I was happy.

I had a good experience while I was there, but the hotel needs help with upkeep. The room was fine, but the swimming pool and workout gym were completely closed, and although the dining hall was set up, it wasn’t open, probably because it wasn’t ski season. The owner is older and has trouble keeping everything in working order. The place could be really nice, but it seems like too much for her to run alone.
