Black Mountain Inn

On this return trip I came back to make art for a little getaway, and the man at check-in remembered me. He also told me about upcoming art events downtown Brattleboro. This is still my favorite place by far: the people are lovely, and the rooms are roomy and consistently clean. I'll be back before long.

The price was good, and the bed was comfortable. That's about it for me. We chose the place because the pictures showed picnic tables and a grassy area, but neither was there. I love dogs, though the ones staying above us were running around happily and made it hard to rest underneath them. We won't be back.

I needed somewhere nearby at the last minute and ended up regretting it. Even paying twice as much for a real hotel would have been better. The room smelled powerfully musty and moldy, so I opened the only window and turned the AC way up. The hot tub was out of order, and I wouldn't have used it anyway after seeing stagnant water sitting in the bottom. No idea how long it had been there. The floor was sticky and dirty, with stained walls, cobwebs overhead, and bugs splattered around. I woke with a headache and sore throat. I also saw someone I thought looked like a tweaker sitting on a bench on the property, which felt scary with my motorcycle parked just six feet away. There's basically nothing on site. The outdoor vending machine was broken, and the coffee felt like a gamble. Luckily I had water, juice, and alcohol with me, so I numbed myself and passed out. I slept fully clothed on top of the bed because I couldn't make myself get in it. I'm surprised by the good reviews; maybe those guests got much better rooms. With some time and money this place could be a gold mine, but I think the area is holding it back.

My boyfriend grabbed a room on a whim when rain interrupted my cross-country camping trip, so my pup and I had somewhere to spend the night. I was really pleased with the whole stop. The room had plenty of space, a cozy bed, a deep tub, and even a little couch for my dog. The front desk gentleman, Xavier, I think, was lovely and helpful. I'll stay here again the next time I'm passing through.
