California Suites Motel

I didn’t stay here myself. My father spent two nights there, then his rental car broke down and he had to wait for me to pick him up after my four-hour drive. Even though checkout was at 11 a.m., they wouldn’t let him use the bathroom while he waited.

The rooms are decent, though a little run down. The bathroom is so small you can almost brush your feet against the sink while sitting on the toilet, and the mirror is tarnished. There are no outlets by the nightstand. A little care could make the place much better.

The room was clean, and the location worked well for us. The towels were a bit lacking, and the curtain couldn’t close all the way because of the rod. Still, for the money and keeping in mind that everything is relative, this place was exceptional. The lady at the front desk was pleasant.

The worst part was the lighting at night. Searchlights at the corners of the "compound" blasted the room windows, on top of the fluorescent lights outside each room. The thin curtain barely covered the window frame, so I stuffed towels above and below it to block the worst of the brightness. It only made the room dimmer, not like daylight, and I needed my eyeshades. The place was pretty clean, with a coffee maker, fridge, microwave, and really fast WiFi. I would have preferred a small table and chair instead of the armchair, if space allowed. A bedside lamp would have helped too, so I wouldn’t have to cross the room to switch off the light or have a bright glare above me while watching TV. The ice machine was out of order.
