We were the only guests, and after seeing the room we stayed only long enough to arrange another hotel. The floors and sheets were stained, the shower was gross, the lobby smelled, and there was liquor left in a drawer. White specks covered the dresser, and the fridge and freezer had mold. The pool had been closed for years, though both the hotel site and Expedia listed it as open, with a notice saying closure through June 1. That date was after our stay, so I expected it to be available. When my friend and I asked at the lobby to check out and get a refund, we got several different responses: that we’d been there more than five minutes, that they didn’t give refunds, that Expedia had to handle it, and that we should have read the reviews first. To me, that last comment basically meant we wouldn’t have stayed if we’d known. We moved to a hotel 15 minutes down the road, where the front desk person said they often get people who have just left Calipatria inn and suites. Good location, terrible everything else. Don’t stay here.

We ended up driving to Brawley and staying at the Brawley Inn. It cost the same, and the rooms were clean with kind staff. At this motel, the manager first put us in a filthy downstairs room that smelled strongly of cigarettes. The carpet and bedding were stained, the bedding had dirt and hair on it, and the unvacuumed floor had clumps of dust and dirt. It looked as if someone had been living there. We asked to switch rooms and got one upstairs. It was just as dirty, though it didn’t have the same awful smell. I found the previous guest’s glasses behind the nightstand, along with plenty of dirt, hair, and grime. We arrived around 9 pm to a deserted property with just one truck there. After only about 20 minutes in the rooms, we called the front desk and asked for a refund. The manager refused, saying he didn’t know what we’d done in the room and couldn’t say it was clean. We’d left it as we found it, but he kept arguing that he ran a business and that you get what you pay for. When we mentioned the reviews we’d unfortunately only read afterward, he said we should’ve known better. We were in the middle of nowhere and even considered sleeping in the car. I’ve dealt with uncomfortable motels before, but this was by far the worst hotel or motel I’ve stayed in. We felt scammed by the photos and supposed charm, then blamed for the manager’s failure to keep the place clean. Maybe it was decent long ago, but I can say with certainty that I’d never come back. Unless being disgusted, degraded, and robbed sounds appealing, avoid it. Minus 10,000 out of 10.

I left right away and found another hotel. The room reeked of cigarettes, and there were bugs, both dead and alive. The carpet had burns and mystery stains. This place was completely disgusting, unfit for animals, let alone people. If you care about your health, go somewhere else.

The connecting door to the room next door was unlocked. As a woman staying alone, with a man in that room for a while, I had to put things against the door so he couldn’t get in. The manager also came into my room multiple times before I could answer the door. There was human feces on the front door and the spinning chair, and the room was dirty and smelled bad. The lady was very sweet, but I’ve heard some really bad things about the male manager. I don’t usually leave reviews, but this was the worst motel I’ve stayed in. Drive a few more miles to the Niland Inn. Its manager is lovely and the rooms are clean.

The deadbolt on the door was broken, and the TV didn’t work. The room smelled strongly of cigarettes, too. There were smashed dead spiders on the walls and live ones in the corners. Curtains were coming off the wall, the carpet was stained, paint was chipped, and there were holes in the walls. The chairs were ripped and cracked, and a sheet covered stains on the couch. I didn’t want to touch anything. I wish I’d read the other reviews first. The photos make it look nice, but this was the grossest hotel I’ve ever stayed in. Avoid it at all costs, though I’ll probably never forget it 😆
