Avon Motel

It was quiet during our two nights, and the place is within walking distance of the beach, shops, food, cafes, and coffee shops. It’s pet-friendly too, and we appreciated the free bags of ice each day. The room itself was just okay: very small and a bit run down, with only a tiny mirror in the bathroom and no room on the sink for toiletries. The basic TV, microwave, and very small fridge were adequate. The shower pressure was weak, though the water got hot if you let it run. The photos are a bit misleading. There are lots of other options, so I won’t be back.

A huge thank you to Trey at Avon Motel. Road closures and weather-related ferry closures and storm washout put us in a bind with our departure date. Trey found us a great-priced room for a full day and night. It was clean, well equipped, quiet at night, and very close to the beach. Our whole family appreciates everyone at Avon Motel, and we’ll surely visit again.

I’ve stayed in houses, hotels, and campgrounds during my years visiting the OBX, and this may be my favorite place. I loved the exterior color and the little sandy spot for sitting and grilling. Each room has a chair on the porch, and you can see most of the sunset from there. Drive ten minutes south for the full sunset. The beach is less than five minutes away, with plenty of paths over and through the dunes. The A/C was great, and there’s a cute nook for the microwave and coffee, plus a working mini fridge. I didn’t try the TV. Come to Avon Motel for a beach break and to unplug from technology. I slept well, the bathroom worked fine, and I saw one bug. I want to come back.

Beach access was much closer than I expected, and it was wonderful. The motel is near stores and restaurants, basically across the street from a great fresh seafood market. It’s an older, basic place, but clean, with a great fridge/freezer, microwave, TV, old-school coffee pot, good shower, and beds that were fine. The A/C was amazing during a week of extreme heat, 95+ degrees, and they provide free bags of ice. Dogs are allowed in rooms, and there’s plenty of grassy space for them, but the pet fee is pricey. I couldn’t find the rate on the site, so I asked, and the reply came several days later, after my free-cancellation window had passed. We were stuck with it. When I asked at check-in whether they could lower the charge, they wouldn’t. It’s $30 per pet, per night, with no maximum.
