I chose Dragonfly Ranch because Brian Wilson had stayed there for inspiration, and by the first night I understood why. I heard every musical animal and raindrop in the forest, all around me. I have misphonia, like Wilson, so everyday sounds can be unbearable, but this orchestra of nature felt phantasmic. My husband, our two little girls, a lifelong friend, and I were cozy in the Writer's Studio. Barbara and Phoenix became my two favorite people on the island. I usually avoid people in the morning, but after that first morning I looked forward to seeing them with my coffee. I even found myself listening for them with love and curiosity. Breakfast was great, with the green anole stopping by in the mornings. The hot water came after the suggested four-minute wait, and my daughters and I showered one after another without the warmth running out. We played chess, read tarot cards, cuddled with the animals, and watched the exotic birds dance in the trees. I didn’t want to be around the rich resort crowd. I loathe them. I wanted the jungle, sleeping in my clothes and relaxing in my den. There’s a place I love in Joshua Tree called Hicksville that I visit whenever I can. Dragonfly Ranch gives me that same feeling.

Being close to the jungle was a favorite part of Dragonfly ranch, and Sami helped us get over our fears of Hawaii’s natural wildlife. The rooms were cute and clean, the breakfast was delicious, and the vibes were incredible. It’s in a great location, and they let us borrow snorkeling gear. Thanks so much!

A little nature retreat with thoughtfully decorated rooms and a welcoming team who make sure you have what you need. Breakfast was the highlight, with delicious organic fruit from the property and clean ingredients. Come for a stay that feels different from the usual.

This is a family favorite. The surroundings are beautiful, peaceful, and unlike anywhere else. Barbara and her team make you feel part of their community for a few days, not just like a visitor. The beds are really comfortable, the amenities are great, and the whole place has a sense of peace and belonging. At night, you can hear singing frogs, wind chimes, and the rainforest. We loved using the outdoor communal kitchen, which has everything a good cook could want. Starting the new year with a centering walk through the illuminarium maze was a treat. It gave us a chance to let go of what no longer serves us and welcome our intentions for the year ahead. I can’t recommend this unusual Big Island experience enough.

We only stayed one night because we had other parts of the island to explore, but we wished we’d had more time at Barbara's residence. The Lomilomi room was spacious and beautifully done, with a refined, harmonious, peaceful feel. We arrived in the evening, so it wasn’t until morning that we saw the gorgeous sea and distant cliffs from the room. Every detail has been thought through, and the bedding was so good that we slept really well. I’d never stayed in such an unusual room before. The place is peaceful, with lush greenery and soothing decor. You can hear the frogs faintly, but they didn’t bother us at all. Earplugs are provided if you need them, though I found the sounds pleasant. Breakfast was excellent and varied, prepared by the team and served on a lovely terrace where you can take in the view. I highly recommend this magical place. Thank you, Barbara, for such a wonderful surprise.
