Omni La Costa Resort & Spa Carlsbad

Omni La Costa is a beautiful, family-friendly resort, with a wide range of amenities, a specialized Kid’s Club, aquatic features, golf, and spas. It has the setting for a real escape, but our service experience had some major gaps. We had a 10:00 AM cabana reservation and had prepaid $155 for food platters. Confusion between the front desk, pool servers, Splash Cafe, and Vue over who was handling the order meant the food didn't arrive until 12:40 PM, nearly three hours after check-in. The complimentary Veggie and Hummus tray showed up around 1:30 PM, after we'd already finished our platters and lunch. Francine and Ryelin, the pool servers, were professional and tried to help. Ryelin was especially kind, going to get our platters from Vue, the lobby restaurant, even though that wasn't her area. Management didn't come apologize, address the problem, or check on our party. It seems like the handoffs, management, and staff awareness of resort amenities need work. A dedicated cabana service is part of what I'd expect from luxury hospitality. Having one server cover over 15 families in the kiddie pool area and private cabanas at once didn't meet that standard. The overlap affected the attentive service and exclusivity we expected from a property at this level.

I came for a conference and was struck by how beautiful the resort was. But what made me want to write this review was the women's bathroom. They had feminine products, OTC meds, makeup remover, and other things for women to touch themselves up with. It meant a lot because they had something I badly needed, and I felt seen. The service you don't immediately notice can say a lot about a place.

The rooms have recently been updated and are very nice, though the lack of towel hooks in the suite was odd. The restaurants were good: Vue was very good, with the feel of a nice standard hotel restaurant and great cues. The bar restaurant looked pretty, but the food was just okay. It felt more like a place to hang out than have a full meal. We had a great five days. The people were informative, nice, and helpful, and the facilities are beautiful. The resort is tucked away but still close to Carlsbad, and about half an hour from San Diego. We enjoyed the south golf course and the practice facilities were great. I'd say around 4.5 stars, comparing it with a Ritz Carlton or 4 Seasons. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and I'll be back in a month.

The resort itself is so special, with stunning views wherever you are and great amenities. It sits in a nice, quiet part of Carlsbad, with good golf courses nearby. You can vacation here or have a staycation like I did. You'll need a car to get around or reach the beach, but there isn't much reason to leave the resort.
