Villa Mara Carmel

We stayed in Alvarado and Bixby, and Bixby gives you more room. It faces the front, so you can hear the ocean. The beds were unbelievably comfortable, and the rooms had thoughtful extras like turn-down service, a complimentary minibar, heated floors and toilet, a Dyson hairdryer, and smart TV. The location was a great fit for us. It’s a few minutes to the beach and about a 20-minute walk into town through a beautiful neighborhood full of cottages. We preferred being there to staying downtown, especially because it was so quiet. We also enjoyed the firepit, wine selection, and nightly cake. Breakfast was delicious, with a pastry, a full entree, and good coffee. Villa Mara made our trip. The attentive but casual service from Olivia, Robert, Jonathan, Rocky, and everyone else made it feel special. Staying here was a splurge, but well worth it. We were there a week ago and are still talking about it. If you’re debating, just book it. We’ll be back!

A last-minute trip to Carmel turned into a fantastic stay. Everything about the hotel, its location, and the staff felt like an 11/10. We loved waking up, grabbing coffee to go, and walking Carmel point, then coming back to a lovely breakfast with local favorites such as sweet Elaine’s and ad astra bread. If you’re planning a Carmel trip, staying here is a must. If you aren’t, I’d recommend planning one around this hotel!

We loved eating breakfast outside by the fire pit each morning. The local pastries were delicious, and don’t miss the fresh squeezed orange juice. Every detail seemed thought through, from the heated bathroom floors and bidet to the Dyson hair dryers, complimentary minibar, and nightly cake slices. The staff were so friendly and amazing. Everyone we met was a regular, and we can’t wait to become regulars too. We’re already looking forward to another visit and will be dreaming of the quiet nights by the fire pit until then.

The location feels tucked away and secluded, yet the beach access is just a few blocks away and downtown is a ten minutes drive. Villa Mara itself has thoughtful details throughout, with the refinements I’d expect as a spoiled New Yorker, alongside coastal ease and character. The staff made us feel at home from arrival through departure. They were generous with their time, remembered our names and preferences, and managed to be warm while staying professional. Their sincerity came through. George and Jonathan in particular made the stay spectacular. We’ll be back.
