Sleep Inn Charleston - West Ashley

Getting here was easy, and the front desk staff were incredibly nice. The rooms are a bit old and the furniture feels cheap, but everything was clean and put together well. No real complaints, just a little room for improvement. I'll definitely stay again.

We booked for 04/17/2026 - 04/20/2026 and were assigned a room on the third floor. It smelled damp and moldy, and the place was filthy. Later that first night we found spiders crawling on the pillows at the far corner of the bed, which we hadn't slept on. Under the covers, the beds had orange stains. The lamp seemed infested with some kind of mold or fungus, the fan blades were bent down from all the moisture, and it looked like something was eating away at the wooden entertainment center. After getting up, both of us felt nauseous and the air felt thick. Breakfast was bad too: the sausage was hard, everything tasted off, and it left a bad aftertaste. We saw two rooms being cleaned on the opposite side of the same floor. We peeked into one and it was bright, clean, and had no smell. At the desk we asked to switch, but were told the hotel was completely full. When I mentioned the two units we'd seen, they said they didn't know about them and immediately said they weren't available because they needed to be “checked” and brought to their attention. They told us to come back later. Why not contact me if you have my phone number and email? That was early on the morning of the 18th. Around 5 p.m., after we got back from venturing out, we asked again. A woman with a bit of an attitude said she saw nothing available on the third floor for the units we meant. She offered only a room on the first floor in the same column. It smelled worse, was much darker, and just as dirty. We left, canceled the booking, and are now waiting for my refund. Sure, it's an older hotel and it'll have flaws, but old can still be clean. It was wild that they wouldn't give us the clearly open, ready, clean room with the better, sealed air conditioner. We drove all the way out there, had to cut our trip short by two nights, and drove all the way back after just one day because the hotel was operating at horribly low standards. All in all, I'm never staying at a Sleep Inn again.

I didn't stay. The front desk person was so off-putting and negative that I left to find another hotel. It felt like she didn't want me there, and booking a room for the night turned adversarial. I don't know why she had such an immediate negative attitude when I walked in. I'm easygoing and have never had an experience like that. So much for southern hospitality at this hotel!

Nikki at the front desk was very kind. Since I had an eye doctor appointment and was going to have my eyes dilated, she let us check in early. When I asked whether they had water, she even gave us two bottles of hers. Our room was clean and comfortable, and breakfast was delicious. We stayed one night for my appointment and will definitely choose this place again if we're in Charleston.
