Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites Cherokee / Casino by IHG

We were there while renovations were underway, and the casino is just across the street. Since we spent each day at the park, it was easy to ignore. This is a good place on the south side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park if you'd rather avoid the commercial feel of the north side.

The location worked well, it wasn't noisy, and the casino is reachable on foot using the path and sidewalks across the street. The woman working breakfast was friendly and a bright spot, even though the food was disappointing. Choices were bland, with only small oranges for fruit; the omelette and sausages tasted artificial, and the shared jam came in two big, sticky bottles instead of individual portions. The room was generally clean, but the bathroom grout looked very old and dirty, the toilet was cracked, and the plastic shower enclosure, though clean, felt basic. Beds were on the soft side. Check-in was the worst part. The older woman at the desk struggled with the system, then left us waiting 10-15 minutes without explanation or reassurance. When we asked how long it might take, she seemed irritated and called the manager. We eventually got keys without an apology or even a goodbye. She acted the same way toward another couple. Given the dated condition, especially on weekends, I don't think the price is justified. Customer service needs real improvement. Technical problems happen, but guests still deserve some attention and sympathy.

We were both exhausted, and with rain and fog setting in, we didn't want to drive down the mountain at night. Most hotels near the casino were booked, so I found Holiday Inn Express & Suites Cherokee/Casino on Priceline at the last minute. It was a good choice. The room was quiet, comfortable, and clean, and the price was reasonable for the area. The casino is very close, which was convenient. We'd happily return when we're nearby.

The room was fine, and the location is good at about half the casino's price. We only got two towels, so I had to ask for more. They did bring them, but could have provided enough to start with. We arrived in the latter half of the day and Laura was condescending, which I didn't appreciate.
