The credit card trouble continued after I got home. Two days later, the motel charged my card. When I called, I got a surly response and was told it was "the system" or "Visa," not the property. I managed hotels for 20 years, and that explanation is false. They charged me twice more after the call, and nobody answered when I tried reaching them again. This place isn’t the cheapest in town, so spend your money elsewhere. The motel is worn out and dated. The front desk agent seemed apathetic and like she’d rather be anywhere else. The lobby coffee was cold; I mentioned it, and she just shrugged. In the room, the toilet water was brown and it wouldn’t flush. Some bulbs were out, dead bugs were on the floor, and the balcony had soda cans and cigarette butts left by previous guests. There was a whirlpool tub, but not enough hot water to use it. The marijuana smell was so strong it gave us the munchies.

I needed an inexpensive place to sleep for a few hours during a trip, and having stayed at other Roadway Inn locations around the country, I wasn’t expecting much. This one surprised me. The room was spacious and clean, with a balcony along the river, and the friendly staff and well-kept hotel made a good impression. It was close to everything, too. It was easily the best Roadway Inn I’ve stayed at, and the price was still great. I’ll book here for longer visits to Cherokee in the future. I think it’s better than some nearby hotels where I’ve paid twice as much.

The location was the best part, and the bed was comfortable. I’d booked a king non-smoking room, but got a room with two beds in a secondary property. It looked nothing like the online photos. There was no microwave, fridge, or curtains, and the door chain was broken. There was also beard shavings left in the bathroom by whoever stayed before me. I didn’t get a mountain or river view, just the parking lot and street noise. Don’t be misled by the ads for this cute, quaint place. The main hotel looks nice, and I can see why guests who stay there give it five stars. But the section I was put in wasn’t remotely worth $133 a night.

I checked out within ten minutes because they said I’d booked a smoking room, which I hadn’t. The staff member told me the refund would be in my bank in 2 to 3 days. Instead, they charged me three times for one night. They now owe me $390. How does that happen? This needs to be resolved.

I had a room on the second floor with a balcony, where I could sit and listen to the river below. The room was clean and extraordinary, as Tammy said. It’s a nice place just outside Cherokee town.
