At 3am, some jerks a few rooms away came back from the bars, I guess, and played pounding bass until 8:45 am. It took my fourth call to the front desk to get anything moving, and all I managed afterward was a 20 minute cat nap. The two different desk staff I spoke with were mostly unhelpful and ineffective. I spent my second night, already prepaid through Expedia, on a friend's futon instead and slept much better. I want a full refund, but neither the hotel nor Expedia seemed willing to cooperate. I eventually had to file a chargeback with my bank to make it right. The hotel's response to this was completely disingenuous given their refusal to refund me. I checked in feeling less welcome than I ever have at a hotel. The lobby was dingy and sad, and the hallway on the third floor smelled like cigarettes and felt as creepy as The Shining, even in the afternoon. My room was pitch black when I entered, with the blackout curtains drawn. Even with the light by the front door on, I couldn't see well enough to avoid bumping into a coffee table, so I finally found the window and let in some light. There was a cigarette smell in the room too, and a hair on the pillow. At $94 a night, none of that would have mattered to me.

The staff were wonderful and helped make up for a few room problems. The room itself was roomy and the bed comfortable, and the location worked well for us, with nearby places to eat and shop plus a lit sidewalk for walking our two small dogs. We were in town for a Maritime festival and stayed three nights. The fridge had no temperature control and froze our drinks and yogurt, the hair dryer plug was broken, and the toilet had trouble flushing. A few basic upgrades could bring the hotel up to a 4-star level.

The staff were excellent, friendly, and very helpful. The room was clean and fresh, with lots of space, a microwave, and a coffee maker. I also appreciated the pet-friendly policy and the quiet development near stores. There are some upgrades the hotel needs: my lock stopped working when the battery died, and the lights could use a single entry switch that shuts them off when you leave. The room should have knives, forks, and spoons, along with cups safe for the microwave. Ceramic coffee cups or Starbucks coffee would feel a little more welcoming. A few improvements would make things easier for the staff, too.

I kept running into problems with the front desk, especially when I asked for things. The older woman there said there was nothing left, though when I asked another person afterward, I got what I needed. She seemed irritated when I asked to have a key remade and didn't seem willing to do the job. I was also told to come back and check out, then check in again when I tried to pay a day ahead, even though I normally pay on Thursday and do that on Friday. When we complained about noise, nothing was done. She said they didn't speak English, even though other staff use Google Translate to communicate with guests. She just doesn't put effort into handling hotel issues.

The room was clean, including the sheets and towels, and there were no bugs. The AC worked well. The carpet, upholstery, prints, and mirrors looked like they may have been replaced in recent years, and those pieces were in good shape. Other things were worn or dated: there was a hole in the wall, a dent in the old shower, tired furniture, and lampshades that looked dirty or out of date. The hallway also seemed old and dirty and needs updating. We made a last-minute trip for the Tea Party festival when rooms were hard to find. With some paint or wallpaper work and maintenance, this could be a much better place.
