Claridge House Chicago, Tapestry Collection by Hilton

We loved the neighborhood, especially Butch McQuires, and there’s a Walgreens within walking distance. Ubers were just a couple of minutes away. Cal’s was handy for a quick bite, with vegan options, or a drink before bed. The wine and popcorn hour was a favorite. The room was clean and had what we needed. The front desk sent a daily check-in text, and when I texted with questions they responded quickly. Everyone was friendly and accommodating from the moment we arrived.

A comfortable, clean place to stay without luxury prices. It isn’t flashy or especially memorable, but the rooms are functional and the classic-looking building has a relaxed feel compared with many downtown hotels. The lake is nearby, and shops, restaurants, and museums are within walking distance. Service was generally friendly and efficient. A solid mid-range base with a quiet, residential atmosphere.

The Gold Coast location is great, and it has a boutique feel. I liked the cozy lobby and cafe, and the front desk staff were kind. But the rooms felt dingy: they were small, the carpet was stained, and the furniture looked cheap. The sheets and towels were cheap material too. I checked out and moved to a hotel that felt more comfortable for my standards.

Everything was perfect in terms of hygiene and service, and I’m enjoying the last part of my Chicago stay here. It’s a good value for a Hilton property on the north side of downtown, near the Red Line and major streets. The building is historic and showing its age in places, including some badly worn carpeting. It looks like they’re making a real effort to renovate it and bring it into a new millennium.
