We stayed in Unit 304, a one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment facing the main street. From the living room there’s a partial view of Sears Tower. The unit is nicely designed, with high ceilings and plenty of space. It has all the kitchen equipment you’d need, free coffee and tea, and an in-unit washer and dryer with detergent pods. Sonder chat was very responsive when we had issues. We got extra towels and bar soap right away because someone happened to be nearby, though other extra items like lotion or soap could take up to 24 hours. It’s best to request everything together. The bathroom needed a deeper clean. The vanity drawers were filthy and the shower had mold. I also felt uneasy seeing a handful of people standing on the sidewalk right outside the apartment entrance. It didn’t seem like they were doing anything wrong, and they were probably getting fresh air from their laborer jobs, but it may be uncomfortable for some when choosing where to book. There were security cameras in the building, especially in the long stairwell and at the hallway ends. There was one above our unit door at the end of the hall, too. I’d stay with Sonder in Chicago again, but at a different location.

The layout worked well for our group of six, and the location was fantastic, close to everything and easy to get around. Each bedroom had its own bathroom, which was a big plus, and the extra half bath was handy. The place was only okay, though, despite having a lot of potential. Cleanliness was a major problem. The bathrooms were extremely dirty when we arrived, the walls had visible grime, the baseboards looked long neglected, and the bedroom walls were covered in dust. The kitchen was also short on basics for a unit advertised for six, with only two wine glasses. Two bedrooms had skylights directly over the beds with no blinds, so sleeping past sunrise was nearly impossible. All the toilets had a lot of toilet paper in them when we arrived, likely left by the cleaners. One clogged, and maintenance just said, “There should be a plunger in the bathroom you can use.” There was no apology or follow-up. A proper professional cleaning before each stay, a kitchen stocked for the guest capacity, covers for the bedroom skylights, and more responsive, accountable service would make a real difference. A simple apology and offer to help would’ve gone a long way. If those things changed, I’d consider staying again or recommending it. As it was, the rental felt like an afterthought rather than a professionally managed place.

We got locked out at midnight with our things trapped inside and a broken lock. No one answered texts or messages through the app. I was on hold for more than 10 minutes and still waiting, sitting on the floor of a moldy apartment building. Customer service was nonexistent. Stay at your own risk.

The top-floor unit 401 was quiet, with no street or neighbor noise, and the location was good. Having three en-suite bedrooms worked great for our small group. The downside was hauling heavy bags up three flights of stairs, then finding another flight inside to reach the living space. There are good restaurants and a Whole Foods within walking distance. I like Sonder’s model and would stay again.

We were a family of five spending a week in Chicago, and the apartment was spacious and modern. The stairs, a couple of flights, weren’t too difficult with our luggage. Several useful places were an easy walk away, including Giordano's Pizza, Meli Cafe for Breakfast, Starbucks, Athena Greek Restaurant, Whole Foods, and Walgreens. Parking on the street worked out fine. We could usually find a free spot right outside or within one or two blocks.
