The Study At University Of Chicago

The king study room and the location were excellent, beyond what I expected. The concierge service, though, was poor and unprofessional. At check-in I specifically asked whether the room charge would be collected at checkout and whether I could use a different card for it than for incidentals. The person checking me in said yes. But partway through my stay, my card was charged. When I asked at the desk, a different person was very unfriendly and said charges over $1,000 are collected mid-stay. I explained that this wasn’t what I’d been told, but he kept repeating that it was hotel policy and that hotels have different policies. He was rude and condescending. After I raised the issue for a third time, he apologized, but reluctantly and with an expression that made it seem like he was annoyed to cancel the charge and run the card again. It was unprofessional for the check-in staff not to know the hotel’s charging policy, and the person handling the problem was unprofessional too. I was disappointed and felt somewhat intimidated by how the concierge dealt with it, especially at a hotel that isn’t a low-end motel. The room, view, location, and amenities were all excellent, but I still have to give it one star.

The Study is a winner. We keep coming back for the well designed, spotless rooms, its great location right on campus, and thoughtful extras like the in-room tea kettle set and delicious free cookies. This time, the staff were especially kind. Someone in our party hurt herself, and the man at the desk sent ice up to our room and loaned us a wheelchair. We’ll definitely return.

My three-year-old left his stuffed dinosaur at The Study when we stayed over the winter holidays. The hotel sent it back with a letter and photos showing the dinosaur having adventures around the property. It was such a sweet surprise, and my little boy loved it. Thank you for the extra special gift.

You feel the calm as soon as you arrive, and the staff are outstanding. The rooms are spacious, with lovely bedding and a walk-in shower that’s bigger than most. There’s complimentary morning coffee and delicious ginger snap cookies all day. The restaurant serves delicious food, with great service too. Impeccable!
