Wingate by Wyndham Christiansburg

We stayed while passing through and would definitely come back. It was a clean, quiet hotel in a great location, and the rooms cost less than other places in the area. Breakfast was good, with some hot items.

The room was okay apart from the booking mess. The bathroom was clean and the bed fairly comfortable, but breakfast was 2/5. Service was 3/5 overall. I raised the problem with the dayshift attendant, who gave me the same answer as the night staff, though she was much more professional about it. I’d booked through Google for the correct dates, but Priceline had the wrong ones. The night staff member didn’t try to help or show sympathy. She said, “Yeah that’s a Priceline problem, if you want a room tonight it’s gonna be bad cause the tech game. Yeah it’ll be about $290”. She also picked up her phone 1-2 times during our conversation to tell someone she’d call them back. I ended up paying another $300 on top of my other booking to get a room here because I had 6 more hours of work driving to do and needed rest. For $300 a night, I expected a lot better.

I spotted roaches around 2 a.m. when I got up to use the bathroom and turned on my phone flashlight. They were crawling in the nightstand and then on the TV stand. This didn’t look like a new problem, it seemed like an infestation. I started looking for another hotel right away and luckily found one. At 4 am I woke my daughter and we left as quickly as we could. While packing, we saw roaches on the desk and our dogs cage too. There was also some dead bug on my pillowcase when I turned it over. It didn’t look like a roach, but some other kind of bug. I still feel like bugs are crawling on me as I write this. There was no one at the desk when I went to check out and report the roaches. A man I’d seen around the hotel that day was making himself a bed on the lobby couch with pillows and blankets. He was in street clothes, so I’d thought he was maintenance or a guest. When he sat up, I asked if he worked there, and he said yes. He went to find someone else to check me out. I finished packing the car, then returned to find a woman at the desk. She gave me a receipt with her managers names at the top in case I wanted to call the next day. They charged me for one night because I hadn’t seen the roaches until night 2. Who charges a customer when there’s a roach problem that’s a public health concern? Management didn’t respond despite several attempts. I disputed the charge with my bank and contacted the bbb, but neither could reach management. I also complained to Wyndham corporate. They said they couldn’t refund me because each hotel is independently owned. They first offered 15,000 points, then raised it to 30,000, but I didn’t want points. I’m turned off staying at any Wyndham property for the foreseeable future. It’s like seeing roaches in a franchise restaurant. Would I go back to that franchise anywhere? Nope!!!

The pool was closed, and there was no notice on the website. I’d booked the room so my daughter could swim for her birthday, so that was disappointing. The room was clean, and the customer service was lovely.
