7 Gables Inn & Suites

A good fit if you just need somewhere to sleep and charge your phone. This is a small hotel, not a fancy resort, but I had a great time and saw at least one family there as well as solo and couple travelers. I mostly got around on foot or by bus, though you do need to allow time to walk to the stops. I wish I'd tried the breakfast, it smelled great.

Don't stay here. We booked in January for July and paid ahead, which I strongly advise against. They overbooked and sold the room we had reserved, then sent us to a foreclosure property off site. It smelled of paint, plastic covered the windows, the furniture had holes, the bedspread and blanket had holes, and there was food left in the refrigerator. We managed only two nights out of the fifteen and had to find another hotel, with most places already booked.

I decided just 10 days ahead of time to take a trip to Alaska to see the northern lights. The Estate Room at 7 gables inn was nicely priced for a last-minute booking, and it was lovely, with a king bed and a Jacuzzi bathtub.

The host was a young woman, and she was friendly, professional, and kind. The place was clean, and we found the bed comfortable. Still, we wouldn't return. We could hear people moving around all night, and being in someone else's house gave us a sketchy feeling. If you don't need much privacy, expect nothing fancy, and are comfortable sleeping in a stranger's home, you might like it. Expectations and perspective matter with a place like this.
