I travel more than 8,000 miles a month for work and have stayed in plenty of business motels. This is the worst one I can remember, maybe the worst ever. Room 110 was 86 degrees when I arrived. I turned the AC down to 70, but by 6 the next morning it had only reached 74. The floors were filthy, and the peel-and-stick fake wood kept sinking and popping back up underfoot. The TV had only basic local channels, most of them frozen or too snowy to watch. The room also smelled strongly of musk and coffee grounds. Later I found a dish of grounds hidden behind the TV. The bathroom was the last straw. When I opened the shower curtain the next morning, I saw long, light brown hair all over the shower and bathroom floor. I'm 52, with black hair going gray, and I walked away rather than shower there. I was exhausted and thunderstorms were raging, so I stuck it out. In retrospect, sleeping in my car would've been cleaner. They charge $100 for a $59 room. Disgusting is the word.

We'd been driving longer than we should have and needed to stop, but this was the worst hotel I've ever stayed at. The shower had no hot water, the linens needed washing, and the bed was much too soft. There were holes in the walls and the rooms looked about 20 years overdue for an update. I called the manager the next day and am still waiting on a credit. If you're driving through, keep going another 40 miles.

The room was gross, with dirty handprints on the walls, a toilet that shifted around, and a floor that left my feet black. I also found what looked like mouse mess in a drawer, and the in-room coffee pot clearly doesn't get cleaned. The TV sound kept switching on and off by itself. The staff at the office seemed more focused on what the kitchen was making for them than getting me checked in. Breakfast wasn't stocked, so I had to ask the desk clerk for cups and milk. Next door, a loud party went on until around 3, with underage kids yelling and throwing up. Nobody seemed to be monitoring the rooms.

The lobby looked nice, but the rooms told a different story. In both rooms I saw the same old red-striped cloth chair, stained enough that I'd avoid sitting on it. The bathroom floor had stains that could've been wiped away, and there were four black hairs in the tub when I arrived. I expected more careful cleaning during a pandemic, but the room didn't feel cleaned at all. The Dutch Inn used to be the nicest place around years ago. It's gone way downhill and now feels like a dump. I was first put in room 227 on a hot evening in Collinsville, around 90 degrees outside. The AC blew air but no cool air, and I was sweating just sitting there. Since my ankle was bothering me and I had a lot to carry, I asked for a first-floor room after learning there was no elevator. The staff member said I'd have to pay to upgrade, then moved me to room 220, where the AC worked. Neither floor's ice machine worked, so I had to go back to the lobby. I got a grocery bag of ice there, but it melted quickly.

The second room worked out much better: clean sheets, mattresses that looked new, no bugs, working lights, cold AC, a cold fridge, and good hot water. We had to keep our shoes on because the floors weren't very clean. The first room had no cold air from the AC, the fridge was unplugged, and one light didn't work, but switching rooms was quick and easy. Breakfast was grab-and-go muffins and cereal, just as the booking had said.
