The smashed burger was the best I’ve had, cooked just right, and the Cuban was great too. Our waiter was excellent. I had sweet iced tea, and it was just the right amount of sweet. We went for lunch and really enjoyed the food.

The beds were so comfortable, with lovely linens that weren’t sweaty polyester and pillows that felt just right. We stayed in the haunted room but didn’t see any ghosts. It had a spacious closet, lovely tubs that lean back, an overhead fan, sheers, blinds, and blackout curtains. We both slept wonderfully. We came to Cross City Florid for a funeral last week and chose the Putnam Lodge after the Chiefland hotels didn’t look promising. Its history drew us in, and the stay turned out to be a delightful surprise. Built in the 1920s during the timber boom, it’s a gorgeous lodge with pecky Cypress. The owner is charming and has put time, money, and love into restoring it. The attentive staff and top-notch restaurant made the visit even better. I had ribeye with homemade mashed potatoes, and the young man in the kitchen had learned his skills working there as a teenager. We enjoyed walking around, reading about the lodge’s history, and taking in the beautiful building, its spacious staircases and lovely hallways. Our room had everything we needed. It was a refreshing change from the chain hotels we’ve stayed at around the country, more like a bed and breakfast without breakfast. The whole stay felt kind of magical. There’s an event room and a beautiful outdoor area with a 20’ x 20‘ fountain. I sat outside, relaxed to smooth jazz, and listened to the birds the owner kept. Even though we were in Cross City for a sad occasion, the lodge brightened the weekend, and I still have wonderful memories of our stay. I hope you’ll consider staying there on a trip near Cross City. Let’s support these historic gems. You won’t regret it.

The grounds were a surprise, much bigger than you’d expect, with Chinese statues scattered around and peacocks roaming freely. It has a cool Florida feel you don’t find much anymore, and it feels like one of the state’s best-kept secrets. The food was really good across the board. The loaded fries stayed crispy the whole time, and the Brussels sprouts stood out, fried in the middle and full of flavor without getting soggy or bitter. The sweet rolls with balsamic olive oil dip were simple but done right. The 1927 salad is worth ordering too. I’d go back for the food alone.

The beds were comfortable, and the kitchen sink was a little dirty. There weren’t more than a handful of TV options, though I guess that’s not really why you’re there. It was surprising that you have to set the room temperature in the hallway. I assume it’s one setting for all guests. It’s a nice restaurant and the staff were pleasant and helpful. The darker-haired woman who checked us in gave us the wrong key and wasn’t helpful or friendly at all. She seemed like she needed to be doing something else. I would’ve liked some information about the LODGE.

A great place to stop between Tampa and Tallahassee. The historic, 100-year-old lodge is charming, with beautiful antiques throughout. Bev the owner does a great job, and the accommodations were top-notch, clean, and spacious. The king bed was super comfortable. I suggest asking for a second-floor room toward the center or back of the lodge, since those are the quietest.
