We reached Custer around 7 pm in October 2025 without a reservation, after running late and missing both Mount Rushmore and our booked hotel in Rapid City. Since tourism was winding down, many places were closed for winter or being remodeled. We’d already tried two hotels without finding two rooms, so finding a few first-floor rooms at the third stop, Days Inn, felt like a big stroke of luck for our family: three adults and a three-month-old baby. I’d seen some negative Google reviews and was worried, but our experience was good. It’s a two-star hotel, and still operating when much of town was quiet for the season. The staff were attentive, friendly, and helpful. They carried our luggage and gave us directions to Mount Rushmore in the morning, since Google Maps hadn’t caught up with local construction. The hotel was very clean, with new carpet, paint, and room furniture. The beds were comfortable, the bathrooms had extra soft towels and good toiletries, and the location and parking were convenient.

The location was great, but for a Wyman name I was very disappointed. The place felt run down, and the bathroom was so gross I didn’t want to shower or even brush my teeth. The toilet sat very low, with no grab bars, and was hard to get up from. There was no coffee maker or microwave in the room, and the air conditioner only worked somewhat. Its clean-filter light stayed on the whole time. We chose to stay in Custer City on a whim because it looked inviting as we drove through, and Days Inn had rooms available. The strong Pine-Sol smell should’ve warned me things might be sketchy. The outside entry door was always open, with no key needed, and our room door was broken: the outside knob was loose and we had to slam it shut. My husband was very sensitive to the Pine-Sol odor and it made him nauseous. The beds were comfortable and the TV was large.

The room was comfortable and had just what we needed after a day in the Black Hills. We were greeted warmly and enjoyed the attentive conversation. We had to leave in a rush the next morning, but our host still sent us off with a friendly goodbye. We appreciated the hospitality a lot and will stay here again next time we’re in Custer. Thank you!

Days Inn Custer, SD took us in at 10:30 at night after rain and wind were rattling the teepee at the other resort. We ended up staying all five nights, and CJ was gracious and accommodating, always greeting us with a smile. The room was clean, the AC cold, the bathroom clean, and the water hot. There was a big refrigerator, too. The beds and pillows were amazing, and coming and going was easy. We also liked the cute Mt Rushmore pictures above the bed and on the room number outside the door. Breakfast was served in a nice, large room with plenty of choices. We’d gone to a pink bakery for breakfast, where the coffee was so weak I asked for stronger and the waitress got flippant, offering espresso instead. That’s a big difference from a good cup of coffee. The coffee at Days Inn was perfect, strong and hot. The laundry facilities were great, and the hotel is close to attractions, restaurants, and shopping. We loved our stay.

The hotel was a little worn, though quiet and clean. Breakfast was decent, with a few different options. Its location was great too, just a block’s walk from downtown Custer and all the things to see and do there.
