Hilton Garden Inn Davis Downtown

Davis is a lovely, walkable town, and the staff were nice. We booked this for my spouse’s birthday so we could have dinner and see a movie. The room was clean, but the hard bed and the raw sewage odor coming from the shower made the stay unpleasant. We’d had a similar problem in Santa Barbara before and got sick for days, so we couldn’t bring ourselves to shower. Parking cost an extra $17, and there wasn’t much in the way of room amenities. I wouldn’t book here again or recommend it unless those things don’t bother you.

Most of the staff were lovely, the bed was comfortable, and I appreciated the complimentary bicycle offer. Still, at $300 a night, the run-down condition is hard to accept. My first room smelled of mold, though thankfully they moved me. In the next one, the tub wouldn’t drain and maintenance took two days to fix it; the towels had holes, too. The elevator doors made a guillotine-like sound whenever they shut, and housekeeping, which comes every other day, missed our scheduled day because of staff shortages. The hotel either needs to be retired or priced like the budget property it is. I can’t imagine Hilton management has visited in years.

After a tiring trip, this place felt pretty gross. The carpet looked like nuclear sludge and showed every mark, and luggage wheels didn’t roll over it well. My sink was blocked and the toilet barely flushed. There were no clean utensils for the overpriced lobby food, so I had to wash the ones they gave me, though the employee on duty apologized a lot. Homeless people were filling up on coffee in the lobby, too. And making guests download an app and fill it out just to park in the hotel lot? Apps aren’t for everything.

I love dogs, but the dog odor in these rooms crept up on me after breathing it in all night. They need a deep clean and air purifiers, and dog owners should bathe their pets before bringing them. A lot of owners seem used to the dander smell and don’t wash their dogs.
