De Smet Super Deluxe Inn and Suites

The only reason we managed two nights was that this was the only place available in De Smet. I won't bring my family back. The room felt damp, with mold or mildew, and our clothes got wet while they were on the couch. The hide-a-beds were broken, and the owners never provided the crib they'd promised. Water was barely warm. We couldn't open the windows because of beetles, and there were mosquitos in the room. The bathroom smelled like methane gas. Breakfast seemed at least three days old. The eggs were hard and rubbery, and the bread was so dry it crumbled in my hand. When we reported the mold, a worker said, "We can't do anything about that. Call the manager." I called at least four times before reaching him. He offered a 15% refund, then said, "you knew where you were staying," as though a room like that were suitable for anyone. It's interesting that the 5-star reviews seem to come from family members. Stay in Brookings.

They were out of most breakfast items by 7:30 a.m., even though breakfast runs from 6 to 9. The beds were uncomfortable, and the hot tub was grimy. I also heard there had been bed bugs in a room near mine the day before I arrived. The one useful feature was a room for cleaning game, though it was basic and didn't have enough table space for several people to work. For what you get, the price is insane. This place needs owners who understand hunting culture. It's an armpit of a hotel.

I only went with a friend to pay to use the pool and hot tub, so I can't speak to the rooms. There was what looked like algae growing on the floors and walls of both. The desk worker kept insisting the paint had worn away, but that wasn't what I was seeing. Someone could get sick swimming in it.

The pool area was clean and well kept, and the pool and hot tub were a highlight after a long day. Our room was spacious, comfortable, and very clean, and the staff were friendly and attentive. We had a great stay at De Smet Super Deluxe Inn & Suites. I'd recommend it for a pleasant place with good service and amenities.
