We stayed, but barely. After traveling with our family through a dozen or more countries, including Tokyo, Vietnam, Cambodia, and all over the US, this was by far the most frightening hotel experience we've had. The huge gap beneath the door, factory-like feel, and general sense of insecurity made it feel like being in "The Shining." I also suspect some of the positive reviews are fake and written by insiders to skew the rating. Avoid this place.
The Bluffs Inn staff were exceptionally friendly after we'd had a long day, which made the stay enjoyable. The room was clean, the bed comfy, and there was a microwave and fridge. It works well for either a quick stop or a longer stay in Decorah.
The elevator was broken, and I heard there were no plans to repair it, despite the motel having four floors. The continental breakfast was also a joke: donuts on weekends, but during the rest of the week it was just coffee, bananas, toast, and cereal. I stayed for a few days, and the first night, around 10 PM, police raided a downstairs room in my building and arrested two people for making methamphetamines. They shut that building for safety, so everyone had to move to the motel's main building at 11:30 PM, just before midnight. I was moved from a smoking room to a non-smoking one and then had to smoke outside. The smoking spot had broken glass, and a mother's small children were out there with her. No one cleaned it up until I begged a housekeeper to do so because I was worried a child would step on it. Stay somewhere else.
Really friendly staff, clean rooms, and no bugs. I live in motels for work, and after finding bugs at Comfort Inn, we came here. The water pressure was great too.
