Best Western Premier Hotel Del Mar

It’s a nice hotel in a good spot, and the beach is about a 30-minute walk away. The beach itself is stunning. We were on the ground floor, and the room blocked traffic noise from outside well. Inside was another matter: the door let through sounds from the ice machine, maintenance room, and hallway air conditioning. Even with earplugs, it was hard to sleep.

We were here because my girlfriend was having surgery in San Diego and needed a quiet place to recover. Instead, doors kept slamming every few minutes, from both housekeeping during the day and guests at night. We had the privacy sign up, but a staff member knocked while opening the door and came right in. We’re light sleepers, so we both woke up. We yelled no and objected, but didn’t use profanity or say anything vulgar. When we raised it with management, the manager came to our room and, in my view, talked down to us. He said staff comfort and safety were the top priority and they wouldn’t tolerate staff being insulted or berated. Then he said that because of the earlier incident, they’d let us stay in our room for the extended stay rather than move us. We’d already arranged the extension and were never meant to change rooms, so it felt like he was pretending to make an exception and doing us a favor. I didn’t catch his name. The front desk staff were laid-back and somewhat accommodating, and the location is decent. Management could use work, and housekeeping needs better hospitality training. Keep this in mind when planning a stay.

A lovely little hotel, and our room was clean and nice for the price. We had a beautiful balcony overlooking the ocean. I’d love to come back in the summer.

We watched the sunset from our second-floor balcony, which had an ocean view even though you can’t see the beach from the hotel. It’s a few blocks up the hill from the shore, at the south end of downtown Del Mar. The room was clean and nicely decorated, and the bathroom was bigger than in many hotels. It was very quiet, with no noise from the hall or neighboring rooms. The front desk team were friendly, helpful, and informative both on the phone and in person. I’d recommend the hotel and would stay again. Getting in and out can be awkward, since you have to make U-turns to head in different directions.
