Residence Inn by Marriott Deptford

Water poured into the kitchenette for over an hour, probably because the person in the room above let the tub overflow. I was told there were no other rooms, so I had to spend a whole night and day in a wet room. The room was a bit dated, with lots of stains all over the carpet. Breakfast was okay, and the location worked well for where I needed to be.

The convenient location was the reason I chose this hotel, and I've been a Marriott fan for a long time. I've worked in the hotel industry for many years, in different departments, including with Marriotts, so I know the standards Marriott hotels are expected to meet. This property falls far short of what Marriott corporate expects from its non-corporate locations. The room felt dark, gloomy, and dingy. The hallways had an odd smell, not exactly bad but not pleasant. The TV in the kitchenette area was loose and tilted, and when I tried to level it, the cable box popped out. The ceiling had disgusting stains, and who knows what might be lurking where you can't see it. We had to replace our bedding, and the mattress protector looked like it had been there for years. When we contacted the front desk on our second night, we weren't even in the system as guests, so we had to get that fixed before we could get service. The bathtub had a grayish hue, as if it hadn't been properly cleaned. Marriott Corporate is very particular about signs of previous guests, and this was disgusting. I posted pictures of these things. The outside of the property was deteriorated and unkempt, which looked like a lack of care by the ownership. The smoking area bench was piled with beer bottles, and the benches looked like they could fall apart. I'm completely dissatisfied and will make Marriott Corporate aware of the property's condition. You could get better prices at a lower end hotel that might look better and save you money. The Fairfield's next door didn't look any better from outside, but I didn't stay there and can't speak to it.

I'm here for business, and the attendant, China, greeted me with snacks at check-in. She was patient with me, and the whole front desk staff was too. I'll definitely book here again when I'm in the area!

We've stayed here many times and booked again while in town for a funeral. Our first room smelled strange, like stale auto exhaust, and it gave me a headache. They moved us to a fresher smelling room, and my headache went away. Later that evening we noticed a few problems. The toilet paper holder was barely attached to the wall and wouldn't hold the roll. More seriously, a door kept slamming loudly. We couldn't tell if it was a nearby room or the outside door at the bottom of the stairs near us, which was being kept open. The safety latch on our room door was very loose and didn't work, so it didn't provide security. We were exhausted from travel and funeral preparations and didn't ask to switch rooms again, but we didn't sleep comfortably. All the employees we encountered were nice and professional. The hotel looks relatively nice and is rather clean overall, aside from a strong marijuana smell in the hallway to the elevator and food left on the floor near the elevator.
