Baymont by Wyndham Downtown Detroit

I had to ask them to turn the hot water back on just so I could shower. They said it sometimes goes in and out, which made no sense to me. I asked for a refund, and the staff member acted like he was entering it on the computer and putting it back on my card, but he didn't. My boyfriend also paid cash for the other room, and they didn't refund him either. The rooms were dirty and poor quality, with no towels and a broken dresser. There were no windows to the outside, just windows facing the hallway where people could see into the room. The place feels rigged together, old, and outdated, with a big-back TV.

The lack of key cards or any access control meant anyone could enter the hotel, which felt like a serious security risk. A guard at a nearby CVS warned us about frequent prostitution and drug activity, and occasional shootings around the property. Back at the hotel, we saw people in the parking lot who looked suspicious and appeared to be involved in drug-related activity. We didn't feel safe staying there, given that and the condition of the room. On check-in, we found visible dirt, stained and unclean sheets, mold in the air conditioning unit, and heavily soiled carpets. Those conditions raised immediate health concerns and fell short of basic cleanliness and habitability. They also differed materially from what was advertised when we booked. Expedia has equal responsibility for guest safety and still won't issue a refund. Don't use them. This is a classic Expedia move, and shame on them. Booking.com is much better.

The parking lot door didn't need a hotel keycard to open, which concerned me. Our room was gross and too small for two queen beds, though maybe some of the rooms are decent. Parts of the flooring were missing, there was mold in the shower, and the bathroom floorboards looked like a rodent had chewed through them. The room was heavily scented, probably to cover unpleasant smells, and my comforter had cigarette burns. As another reviewer said, this place isn't downtown. I wouldn't recommend staying here.

The front desk staff were nice, and the shuttle service was good. The location is close to the Arena, but the rooms were worn out and dated, with dingy gray, stained bed linens. The towels looked clean, but after seeing the sheets and comforter, we were afraid to use them. We travel with our own toiletries and towels, fortunately. We were late for our event and didn't have time to leave, so we stayed. I wouldn't recommend this hotel at all. I've stayed at other Baymonts in other states, and this was the worst. It reminded us of a sticky-sheets motel. Wyndham should be ashamed of how poorly it's maintained. It needs a complete overhaul. Wyndham, do better!
