Holiday Inn Express Devils Lake by IHG

Most of the hotel was clean, but the bedding had a bunch of little black hairs on it, like eyelashes, which was gross. There was no do-not-disturb sign in my room, and shortly after 8 a.m. I was woken by a knock, then room service opened the door while I was still undressed in bed. I hadn’t checked out, and it was still pretty early. Ridiculous. I would’ve given it three or four stars if not for those issues.

Oct. 3, 2025. The room smelled musty and damp, and I cleaned dirt out of the A/C filters and brought it to the front desk. At check-in, the clerk didn’t smile and made an inappropriate comment about whether I could walk far, then mentioned that her mother uses a Walker. My family travels around the world and we’re Diamond members; compared with other IHG hotels, this was the worst. The pool was disgusting, the hot tub was out of service, and the floors and rug were so filthy our feet turned black. When we spoke to the actual manager, they stood up for the clerk instead of listening and calming things down, saying, “o we have gotten but good complements about her”.

We came back after our June '25 stay, a big mistake. It was even worse. My shower towel was still damp after hanging for 20 hours, and the room felt like a cool steam bath from all the humidity. It was very musty, everything looked banged up and worn, and the shower curtain was barely attached to the wall. During the June stay, all four of our rooms were musty too. The wall HVAC systems need cleaning, some lamps didn’t work, and the suite couches were so worn you nearly sat on the floor. The staff were very nice and breakfast was good, but the property needs investment and an update. There aren’t many other options in DL, but we’ll look elsewhere for our August trip and definitely won’t return.

Nice rooms and friendly staff make this a great place to stay when flying in or out. There’s a liquor store across the street if you want to stock up for in-flight drinks.
