La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Dodge City

The staff were kind, and the breakfast service was incredible. The rooms were nice too, but several things made our stay rough. My mother-in-law and husband got stuck in the elevator while taking up our luggage, so they had to use the stairs. Our key card wouldn’t open the door from the rear parking lot, and the lobby was clearly under renovation. The pool was awful: old, stale food had been left on the deck, there were no clean towels, and the water was ice cold, so we couldn’t swim. The “hot tub” was only lukewarm and smelled like sewage. The pool was a major reason we booked, so I was really disappointed. The kind staff and great breakfast are the only reason I’m giving two stars. There’s a lot that would need fixing to change my mind.

The only good thing I can say is that the king room we rented was clean. The place felt neglected and low budget, and paying $135 plus per room each night for what we got was completely out of line. The front entrance foyer had a large flock of pigeons living there and defecating around the lobby doorway. The pool and spa area was filthy, and the second room we rented smelled like sewer. There weren’t any pool towels, so we had to walk out to the lobby dripping wet to ask for them. When I raised the pool condition with the front desk, the staff member apologized and said she’d tell someone. She confirmed she was in charge when I asked, but didn’t seem to care when I said I’d be ashamed to present a pool in that state. I have pictures. Breakfast was terrible, the worst hotel breakfast I’ve had: runny, tasteless gravy and raw biscuits.

I didn’t try breakfast, so I can’t comment on it. What let me down was that both the pool and hot tub were out of service, even though the website still listed them. After a long day, it was disappointing not to have those amenities. I understand renovations are happening, but an update online or a heads-up would have helped. I stayed two nights; the room was clean, the bed comfortable, and the staff genuinely welcoming. The location near most of Dodge City’s main attractions made exploring easy. The stay was comfortable overall, and I’d consider returning after the renovation work is done.

Marisol at the desk made check-in a pleasure. The property has been renovated recently, though work is still going on. My room was nicely furnished and had two large TVs. The AC was my one complaint: it wasn’t adequate for a room that size, wouldn’t go below 66, and only ran for a few minutes at a time. I prefer it around 65 at night, so I was sweating in bed. Apart from that, it was a good stay.
