Ash Mill Farm Bed & Breakfast

The staff were warm and friendly, and check-in was easy. We found the rooms clean, with water always available, and enjoyed the tasty breakfast. It was just what we expected: an old farmhouse with lots of character. A pleasant stay.

The farm itself is peaceful and beautiful, and it has plenty of potential, but the stay didn't live up to it. I've stayed in many B&Bs and like old houses, so I expect a few quirks. This went further: the bed was painfully uncomfortable, dead bugs were on the floor and windowsill, and the shower looked streaky and green. The innkeepers never introduced themselves or told us their names.

It was quiet, and we could store some food in the guest fridge and walk around the property to see the sheep. Beforehand, the innkeeper also discussed breakfast with me, accommodated my dietary restrictions, and was willing to serve my friend and me early. Those were the bright spots. We stayed in the third-floor suite, which was much too hot. It had two bedrooms but only one tiny AC unit, and that barely cooled its room. We were told fans would be brought up, but they never came; later, we were told there weren't any. The bathroom toilet and floor were visibly dirty. The king bed had what looked like cheap stretchy polyester sheets, and there were no usual bathroom cups or nice amenities. The suite also didn't feel secure. The bedroom had a key, but the door to the whole floor couldn't be locked from outside, and someone could enter the bedroom through the bathroom. I paid $233 a night. That's not especially high for a B&B, but it was more than this stay was worth, especially with a dirty toilet and rooms we couldn't cool. The place needs better upkeep and cleaning. Maybe the cottages or other rooms are nicer and cooler in summer, but this was our experience. I told them what we were unhappy about, so hopefully they'll clean the bathrooms better and find a way to cool and secure that space.

The goats were adorable, and Izzy, the caretaker, was an absolute sweetheart. We loved the delicious food and the quiet, which was just what we needed. The place is very basic, but it gave us a real break from the daily grind. More towels would've been nice, though we didn't ask anyone for extras, so I'm not taking off a star for that.
