I gave the Canfield 2 out of 5. It has potential, and its downtown location is handy if you want to walk to bars and restaurants with great food and drinks. It's the lowest-cost downtown option. For a little less money, there are about five other hotels up the hill, but you'd need an Uber to go downtown, and they'd be cleaner with more up-to-date amenities. The owners or management seem to have run out of care, and it shows from the moment you arrive. Bikes were chained to fences, railings, street signs, and all around the building. People were even taking them in the elevators. The old signage was poorly maintained and badly lit. The lobby smelled musty, with lingering cigarette smoke. The hotel dates to the 1950s, and old ashtrays are still mounted throughout; smoke can seep into walls and ceilings over the years, and residents use a smoking patio before bringing the smell upstairs on their clothes. The lobby's period decor and lighting could be nice, but it isn't maintained or well lit. Staff were helpful at check-in, though all business, and shelves piled with toilet paper, microwaves, lightbulbs, and deliveries for long-term residents didn't make the place feel welcoming. Worn instructions were taped all over the halls and elevator. One says to hold the door-open button to get off on your floor because the elevator drops an inch to line up. Without the sign, you might wonder how to get out. The room made me say "Wow," in the bad way, and think I should have stayed at the Motel 6 up the hill. It was as clean as it could be, but the decor and infrastructure haven't been updated since the 1970s. The LCD TV had 10 channels and the WiFi was unusably slow. We didn't get bedbugs, see roaches, or have our car or room broken into. We were honestly relieved, which says a lot about the impression the place made. The Canfield could make something of its locked-in-time style if the owners embraced it and made it clean and inviting. Maybe start with one room, put up Dirty Harry, Taxi Driver, Death Wish, and The French Connection posters, add shag carpet and thrift-store mid-century modern furniture. High Life Lounge in Des Moines shows what I mean.

The room was dark and dingy, and the bedding looked like someone had tossed a comforter over used sheets. The fifth floor smelled even more strongly of cigarettes and marijuana than the dark, smoke-smelling lobby. The desk person was nice enough, but the elevator door wouldn't open unless we held down the door-open button. I went straight back to the desk and said I couldn't stay. She was sympathetic, but couldn't refund me herself. She said she'd pass along my complaints to the owner and that Travelocity would work on a refund request. Since it was already late, my son and I had to find somewhere else to stay. Travelocity tried several times to get the hotel and owner to approve a refund waiver, but got no response. Very disappointing.

We love divey places, and this felt like stepping into a time machine. We had a blast at karaoke, met some really interesting characters, watched the first snow of the year through our window, and enjoyed the antiques in our room. Wish we'd stayed longer. Places with genuine charm are getting rare, so enjoy this one before it's painted millennial gray! P.S. If you need an elevator to reach the upper floors, call ahead. It was out when we stayed on 11/8/25.

I tried staying here in April 2025, but the general dinginess didn't give me much confidence. After getting my key, I went to the room and found what looked like a bedbug shell in the sink. I didn't stay around to see whether it had been killed there or anything. I went right back out and returned to the desk. To their credit, the front desk staff member quickly took the key and explained how to get a refund. I had to contact the booking agency myself, and Canfield staff were again helpful in making sure the agency had what it needed to process it. Next time I'm in Dubuque, I'd save myself the middle steps and choose somewhere else.

I've stayed at this great old hotel a couple of times and love it. The staff are friendly, the rooms are clean, and downtown bars and restaurants are close by. There's also a lounge downstairs if karaoke doesn't bother you. It's an older building, with tiny bathrooms and a creaky elevator. If that kind of thing gets to you, it might not suit you. I love the place.
