We stayed in the library suite and slept very well in its comfortable bed. It was clean and beautifully decorated, with its own bathroom and a bathtub but no shower. Since the bedroom was the library, it had a wonderful collection of old books from the 1800's. They had an old-book smell, but not enough to complain about. David and Michelle were fantastic hosts, and the house itself left us in awe. David gave us a tour and shared its history when we arrived. The website description was accurate about the exterior needing repair, while the inside is amazing and thoughtfully set up for guests. Breakfast was delicious and very filling, especially the waffles and coffee cake. You won't leave hungry. We found this place on Expedia for an anniversary day trip to Galena. It's in West Dubuque, about 20 minutes from Galena, an easy drive that let us avoid downtown lodging prices. We'd highly recommend it and will book again.

The owners were friendly, and the charming rooms even had a fireplace in ours. We had a great time at the Richards House. Breakfast was freshly made at home and delicious. A great experience all around.

By morning, breakfast came with the sort of care that made this feel like a home away from home. The night had felt intimate and unhurried, with simple moments taking their time. At Richard’s House, the city lights and everyday worries slipped away, leaving tall Victorian ceilings, fireplaces, and the glow of a different era. An old radio played in a nearby room, tucked behind pocket doors, while the place brought back memories of flickering gas lamps. It felt less like a hotel getaway in Dubuque and more like stepping into a memory. After the snow melted from our shoes, warmth took over. A clawfoot tub waited by the fire for our tired bones, and time seemed to stand still. It even took an afternoon nap in one of the two soft leather chairs.

Michelle was so sweet and knew so much about the history of Richards House. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. The antique furniture and decor in every room made the place feel elegant and charming. Breakfast was included and delicious, and the house is very close to downtown Dubuque. Great service and great people. If I'm in town again, I'll stay here.

We had a lovely bed and breakfast stay for my mom's 70th birthday. Michelle and Dave were wonderful hosts and made a fantastic breakfast. Even though we got in from Chicago late on Friday, around 10pm, they were there to receive us and check us in. The outside had some scaffolding while restorations were underway, but our room was still warm and quiet. There's antique furniture, lamps, and features all over the house, so leave extra time for a tour. I was absolutely giddy that our room key was a fully functioning skeleton key!
