We’d come back to Cobblestone in Durand. This was our second visit, and the staff were helpful and friendly. The room was clean, and having a TV in both the bedroom and the sitting area was handy. The suite also had a full-size refrigerator, a stovetop we didn’t need, and a microwave. It could use a few more dishes. The sofa bed was useful for keeping a snorer out of the bedroom, though its old mattress had squeaky springs. The regular bed was just okay. Breakfast had plenty to choose from: waffles, eggs, biscuits and gravy, cereal, yogurt, bagels, toast, fruit and juice, plus regular and decaf coffee. The waffles came out really good. The eggs were the pre-made kind you’d get at a fast-food place. Rates were a bit higher than on our earlier stay this year, maybe because the hotel was pretty booked that weekend. The room felt comparable to what you’d get at other chain hotels.

It’s clean and the continental breakfast was nice. The location in a neighborhood felt a little unusual, and we shut the curtains since our window looked out at a red barn or shed. Our bed was so hard it felt like plywood, though, and we woke up with sore backs. We even went to a chiropractor once we got home.

The beds were cozy and comfortable, with down comforters that made them extra warm. The hotel was clean and felt surprisingly modern, and the staff were both friendly and helpful. Pretty impressive for a place in the middle of nowhere, a real hidden gem in a ghost town.

After driving for 6 hours, we arrived around 9:00 pm to a desk clerk who seemed unhappy at work and was short with us. He gave us a key for a room that was already occupied. We opened the door and found a couple asleep inside. Back at the desk, he seemed annoyed that we’d returned and didn’t appear concerned that we’d walked in on them. He then said we couldn’t have the King Room we’d reserved and paid for more than a month earlier, so we were moved to a double queen room. The AC wouldn’t work during a weekend with temperatures in the 90s. We also had to pay to use the small in-room safes, so we couldn’t lock up our private belongings.

The front desk women had baked cookies when I checked in late, which was a great welcome. It was my first stay, and the staff were so friendly and helpful. The room and amenities were great too, with a fridge and USB charging ports, things big hotels often leave out. Breakfast was simple but good. I had a Belgium waffle and sausage. I’ll stay here again next time I’m back.
