This place shut as a hotel years ago and, from what I hear, is now overpriced apartments. I read that the last hotel guests with reservations were forced to leave early after it was sold. I stayed there several times over five years while taking my son to and from summer camp. We made great family memories, though the hotel often disappointed: the wi-fi was frequently out, it was kind of grungy, and several things weren’t working properly on our last visit. We stopped staying there on our final camp trips. Looking back, I think the owner had decided years ago to let the hotel run down, charging too much and putting little care into it until he could sell the real estate. Even with the poor service, I’ll never forget the place because of its connection to my family, and it’ll always have a place in my heart. Durango is a fun town to walk around, so stay downtown.

I was only there to visit someone who lives in the building. It isn’t the Durango Downtown Inn anymore; it’s now called the Roost. The hotel rooms have been converted into small studio apartments that rent for an outrageous amount.

The front desk receptionist was very nice, and the hotel has a great location and nice amenities. It’s a shame the place is in such poor shape for what the rooms cost. The rooms badly need updating and maintenance, and they smell old and musty. When I tried to use the hair dryer, it sparked and smoked. The old, loose outlets wouldn’t hold chargers, the carpet had gross stains, there was no bathroom exhaust fan, and the light switch had to be held and wiggled to stay on. The AC filled the room with an awful mildew smell. We stayed five days and had cleaners come midweek, but they didn’t change the sheets or make the bed, just tossed up the comforter. They also didn’t replace the toilet paper, coffee, ice bucket liner, or soap. When I went to ask someone, I found her eating lunch in one of the rooms she was cleaning. The pool could be really nice, but all the sliders are blocked so they can’t be opened, and the spa jet knob was broken off. Also, don’t pay an extra $70 for a riverfront view: cars and trees block it, so it isn’t really a river view.

We’re local and have stayed here a few times over the years when we wanted a night in town. This visit was different: a water pump broke during the last freeze, and we needed somewhere to stay. When we explained the situation while making the reservation, the manager did everything possible to look after us for a couple of days. It was probably our best experience here. Prices were reasonable, the room was clean and comfortable, the location is perfect, and every interaction with staff was exceptional. We’ll definitely stay again.

The courtyard is pleasant, with tables and benches, and the pool is good for little kids. There’s laundry on site, too. The room was clean, with nice beds. I’d choose a courtyard view, since the river view looks across the motel parking lot. Staff were pleasant and accommodating, and it’s an easy two-block walk to the middle of historic downtown. I’d stay again.
