Hampton Inn & Suites Edgewood/Aberdeen-South

The main thing to consider is the location. Like most hotels nearby, this Hampton Inn sits on a main road feeding into the highway, so traffic was loud, especially the trucks. I hadn’t realized that when booking a room on the road-facing side. I’d suggest asking for one on the other side to cut down on the noise. Otherwise, it’s a typical Hampton Inn. If you’ve stayed at one before, you’ll know what to expect. The rooms and common areas were well maintained, and I found the business center useful.

We had a large room with two queen beds, a desk and chair, microwave, mini fridge, couch, coffee table, a separate kitchen counter and sink, coffee maker, and TV. The TV was in an awkward spot, so it wasn’t comfortable to watch from either the beds or couch. We also got two water bottles at check-in, and when I accidentally locked myself out, the desk kindly gave me another key. Staff were generally welcoming and helpful. The hotel is convenient to reach from the highway without being so close that constant traffic is a problem. There’s free self-parking on the property, with no need to register your car. It’s in a business park with lots of hotels and several restaurants nearby. Island Spice Grill & Lounge is the only one I’d call walkable, about six minutes away. For the others, you’ll probably need to drive to avoid crossing busy roads. This works well for longer stays, especially if you need to work from your room. Housekeeping came every day without us having to ask. The bathroom sink leaked, though, soaking our things on the shelf below it on the first evening. A maintenance worker came after we told the desk, but the leak wasn’t fixed. We got extra towels to mop up, then stopped putting anything under the sink. I thought the included breakfast buffet was excellent. My husband wasn’t impressed by the quality of the eggs and breakfast meats, but he’s a tougher judge of hotel breakfasts than I am. I don’t expect a five-star meal from a complimentary breakfast. There was a rotating hot selection each day, including eggs such as cheese omelets or scrambled eggs, sausage patties or bacon, and some kind of homestyle potatoes. Waffles were available every day, along with fruit, yogurt, oatmeal and toppings, cereal, pastries, bread, bagels, hard-boiled eggs, juice, milk, coffee, butter, cream cheese, and peanut butter. Granola would have been nice with yogurt or oatmeal. The breakfast staff were attentive and quickly replenished anything that ran out. It’s a nice hotel for the price, and I’d recommend it. I look forward to staying again.

The breakfast staff kept everything available and were very attentive. There were waffles, cereal, yogurt, juices, oatmeal, muffins, and pastry pockets, with the last two being the best part for the kids. For anyone wanting something besides a sweet start, though, the choices may leave you disappointed and hungry. The protein options were scrambled eggs, ham, and a bagel with cheese and sausage. The eggs were inedible, the ham was just ham, and the topped bagel had little flavor. Oatmeal toppings were limited to cinnamon and sugar, raisins, or almonds. Granola would’ve been nice. The coffee was hot and always refreshed, at least. The room was clean, a good size, had no odd smell, and the bedding was comfortable. Desk staff were friendly and helpful.

The room was clean, but we won’t be back. We stayed last year and liked it, and since we have family nearby, we expected to use this hotel several times a year. This winter stay changed that. It was hot and stuffy, with no way to get fresh air. The windows don’t open, and the thermostat only offers “fan,” not cool. The control panel is blocked, so you can’t change that setting. Turning the wall unit all the way down did nothing. A front desk employee came up after we asked, glanced at the thermostat, said it was working, and left. The huge, heavy comforters were unusable in that heat. Even in winter, guests need access to open windows or AC when a room is hot and stuffy.
