We didn’t stay at all. At 10pm, after driving nearly four hours to get there, we turned around and drove home. I was pregnant and had my 2 year old with me, and we needed a non-smoking room. The one we got reeked of smoke. The smoke detector had been ripped out with wires exposed, there were broken lamps, and roaches, both dead and alive. We took a quick look, then went to the front desk. They called the owner, who was no help, denied the room could smell of smoke, and refused to give us another room or a refund. Since there’s only a phone number and no email, I haven’t been able to get anything documenting that we never stayed, which I need for a refund through my booking site. Nobody has answered when I’ve called, and nobody has called me back. Terrible, terrible, terrible.

I was on my way to visit my Daddy in a memory care facility and needed somewhere affordable on short notice. This seemed like it would work, but I didn’t feel safe. I killed four roaches as soon as I came in and couldn’t bring myself to turn down the bed. I grabbed my travel blanket from the car and wrapped up in that instead.

I feel so welcome at Whistling Pines Motel that I’ve started to feel like part of the family, thanks to the woman at the front desk. The rooms are always cleaned to perfection, though they could use room phones. That isn’t her fault, and the prices being a little steep isn’t either. I’m so comfortable here that by the end of the day, the cost doesn’t seem to matter. This is absolutely my favorite place to stay.
