We had a lovely lunch on Saturday with a breathtaking ocean view, after a magical dinner there on Friday. The Harbor House Inn team is warm and friendly, and the ambiance is cool. The grounds are beautiful, with a path down to the beach and nice spots along the way to sit and take in the scenery. There are plenty of nearby places to explore and hike, too. Looking forward to coming back with dear friends. Hope you treat yourself to a meal here on a Mendocino County trip!

The Harbor House is a lovely historic inn, and the view out back is jaw-dropping. Our Meadowview room was beautifully decorated and had a wonderful shower, but a number of issues made it hard to enjoy our stay or sleep. The website called it “quiet,” yet the room is almost right on Highway 1. The pasture mentioned in the description is across the road, and although traffic isn’t especially heavy, trucks and other vehicles passed all night. We couldn’t sleep with the windows open, and without air conditioning or even a fan, the room got stuffy. Several things kept making noise through the night: the mini-fridge cycling on and off, and the bathroom heater, which seemed set to hold a certain temperature and kept returning to a higher one when we tried to lower it. A motion-sensor bathroom light couldn’t be turned off, so it blasted us with light and spilled into the bedroom whenever we went in. There wasn’t anyone at the front desk after hours or early in the morning, so we couldn’t get these problems handled as they happened. There was no coffee available until staff arrived, I believe around 7am, since there’s no coffee maker in the room. I mentioned everything at checkout and was told they’d follow up, but we never heard back.

Each course at our Monday dinner at the Harbor House Inn felt distinct, so picking a favorite was impossible. The tasting menu was paired beautifully with wine, and everything was presented with care, sometimes on local pottery or in abalone shells. We also got to choose our sake cups, a personal touch that made the meal feel immersive. Adrienne welcomed us and brought us to the back terrace, where fireplaces and an ocean sunset set the mood. We started with amuse-bouche in the study, then moved to the main dining room, whose timeless elegance was a lovely setting for the meal. The service was beautifully coordinated, flowing with gentle precision. Many thanks to Ella and the whole team for their attention, grace, and care. They made an already wonderful meal into an evening I won’t forget.

The people are what make Harbor House Inn stand out. Everyone was kind, generous, and attentive without making the service feel stiff or forced. From booking through the daily rhythm of the stay and departure, everything felt seamless and welcoming. Thank you to Matthew Kammerer and the whole team for their warmth and care. The property is serene and beautifully kept, fitting naturally into the landscape. The Mendocino coast is wild, grounding, and breathtaking, and this is a wonderful place from which to take it in. I expect this will become a yearly retreat for me. The food was thoughtful and precisely prepared, with flavors that surprised me and were still deeply satisfying. Each course felt purposeful, and the inspired wine pairing matched the menu beautifully. This was much more than a Michelin star meal or a stay; it was an extraordinary experience I won’t forget. Always Remember “Be A Swan.” Thank You! Highly recommended.

The inn was peaceful and calming, and I liked that people kept their voices low. I stayed two nights and ate all my meals there, including the dinner tasting menu. The food tasted clean and used high quality original ingredients. There were both sea animals and sea vegetables, which made for an interesting mix. The service was extraordinary. Staff were friendly and made an effort to remember our names and what we were celebrating. They also made sure we got to try a variety of the food the inn offers.
