Hyatt Vacation Club at The Welk, San Diego Area

We felt at home for the week. The units aren’t modern or updated, but they were clean and cozy. The resort was easy to reach by text when we needed something missing from the kitchen, and they were happy to bring it. Pools were clean and well kept, and the recreation areas and amenities kept both kids and adults entertained. San Diego is about 35-40 minutes away, but there’s plenty to see and do within 15 minutes. The setting felt close to the city while still having the beauty and stunning views of being outside it. I’d recommend stays at The Welk and hope to return.

I’ve been coming to Welk Resort in Escondido for years for birthdays, holidays, and family getaways. It’s a reliable North County San Diego staycation spot when we want to relax without a long trip. I especially like the Boulder Villas and Mountain Villas, ideally with a golf course view. The open greens make for peaceful mornings and a real resort feel. The koi and fish ponds are a quiet, scenic spot too. There’s so much on the property that we can park the car and stay put: on-site dining, pizza and casual food, a market, a theater, and even a weekday farmers market vibe. Whether it’s a weekend away or a celebration, it keeps turning simple stays into great memories.

We had a lovely view of the golf course from our room, and the pool area was incredible, with games, vending machines, an arcade, food, and ice cream. The Canyon Restaurant was fantastic too, especially the fried shrimp, and it had a full bar and some great gluten-free options. I do wish breakfast were available on-site since I had to order through DoorDash. The area is remote, with no stores or restaurants nearby, so bring food and supplies. Our room had a lingering cigarette smell, was outdated, and could have been cleaner. The grounds also seemed to need more attention and maintenance. I’d love to return, but next time I’d request an updated room. The place has plenty of potential, and better room quality and upkeep would improve the experience.

Business travelers, beware. I work remotely and need internet, but the building I was assigned had almost no Wi-Fi. It only worked if I stood in one particular spot in the hallway, despite internet being a promised amenity. After a long travel day, I arrived late and asked the front desk where to get water. There was no store or vending machine open after 11pm, and the only option they gave me was a gas station 10miles away. After checkout, I tried for days to get a receipt through the app and email without a response. When I finally reached someone by phone, she said she’d send it that day. I asked if she could send it right then since I’d already waited days, and she replied, “No, I have other things I need to do first to help other customers.” It’s 2026, the whole facility should have Wi-Fi. I don’t know who taught this company hospitality, but it’s time for another lesson.
