Sven's Basecamp Hostel

We had a lot of fun here on our honeymoon, staying on 8/31. We paid extra for a private cabin, so I can't comment on the dorms. Summer hotels in Fairbanks are really expensive, which made this a good deal. Staff were very polite, and they took our laundry to wash overnight so it was ready the next day. I'd recommend it to an Alaskan traveler who's curious about the place.

The tent dorm was okay, but you never know who you'll be sharing with. One night some drunk people came in after midnight, stumbled around, and made a racket until about 1:30am, when they finally went to bed. The gate-style lock and handle are loud, and people coming and going at night may not know how to use them. I'd choose a cabin or book the entire dorm for yourself and friends.

Good value, especially for bachelors, and the staff were friendly. We were unlucky that the heater's gas valve was shut off, so we couldn't use it overnight. One suggestion for anyone arriving late: on a heavy rainy night, with no electricity in the hostel, clear signs to the bathroom would help, like the signs pointing to the rooms. I had to search for it in the rain. Just feedback, not a complaint 🙂

The location was easy to find and really good, and check-in was super friendly. Showers were clean and hot. If you're okay with a bit of roughing it and walking to the bathroom, this place is just right.
