West Side Motel

This was hands down the worst place I've stayed, and I've been hunting for over 40 years and slept in some pretty nasty spots. The price was much higher than advertised, and I can't help wondering if I was charged for all the mice that spent the night. If it's over $50, don't stay here. You'd sleep better in an ice-cold truck. The woman owner acted like some high-class business owner and should find work that doesn't involve dealing with people. The Dew Drop in motel in Miller, about 40 miles south, was cheaper and clean. I didn't see or hear a single mouse there. Maybe that's why it cost less?

The location was pretty convenient for my stay, and the rooms were definitely cheap. Still, there were bugs on the floor and water leaked out of the shower wall. The fridge was tiny, and the place could use fresh paint and new carpet.

Our stay was a disaster. The room was incredibly dirty, clearly hadn't been cleaned before we arrived, and the toilet had been used and left unflushed. Dead bugs were everywhere. When we tried to check out at 9 a.m., nobody was in the office and we couldn't reach staff. The phones were turned off, and the voicemail box was full, so there was no way to leave a message.

We've stayed here many times over the years, and each visit has been worse. Since it's one of only two motels in town, we kept coming back, but we won't again. Rooms and cabins are often missing basic things like carpet and lightbulbs. The fixtures, plumbing, heat, and a/c might work or might not, depending on the room, and good luck reaching anyone to get it fixed. On our last stay, only three rooms in the whole place were occupied, yet we were charged “hunting rates,” $40 more than regular rates. We weren't even there to hunt. At checkout, after waiting over an hour for someone to come to the office, we told the clerk/manager how unhappy we were. They just stared blankly and said that's how it is there and nothing would be done. Then, 30 minutes into our drive home, the owner called to say we should never come back because we'd upset the manager. Wait, what? That won't be a problem. Good luck treating your guests like this.
