I’ve been an owner at Windward Passage Resort for over 40 years and have paid my maintenance fees every year. In all that time, I’ve only visited four times, counting the first trip when we bought the unit. That doesn’t feel like much value for what I’ve paid. My first husband and I bought the timeshare in 1984, but his Army career left little time for family vacations, so we exchanged our week each year for resorts near wherever we were stationed. My current husband and I visited just once, in November 2019, before the hurricanes. Before all this, our only issue was that we hadn’t been there enough to have any firsthand problems. Hurricane Ian demolished the resort in September 2022. Then Hurricane Milton caused significant damage in October 2024 while repairs were underway. Now I’m facing a special assessment for repairs and rebuilding beyond what insurance covers. In December 2024, I asked about giving back the deed so I could avoid the assessment, but was told by email that they no longer accept deed-backs. The General Manager also told me the Board of Directors won’t allow deed-backs given the resort’s situation after the hurricane. They suggested selling the unit, which I’ve already tried unsuccessfully. That isn’t a solution, and I feel trapped in an ownership I no longer want, with no resolution. With climate change, I expect hurricanes to keep affecting Ft. Myers beach, so I don’t see the point of putting more money into rebuilding Windward Passage Resort. I’m writing this to warn others against putting their time or money into this place. BE WARNED.
The sunsets were BEAUTIFUL, and I’d recommend the place. We visited Fort Myers for the first time and had a beachfront one-bedroom condo that was absolutely adorable for a couple. The downside was people starting their laundry and then heading to the beach for hours, leaving the machines unavailable to everyone else. Traffic getting onto the island was a bit much. It could take about 15 minutes to get off, but 45 minutes to an hour to get back because so many people were trying to reach the beach.
If you want to rent an umbrella and sit in the sand, it’s a great place. But we couldn’t use the pool for the first few days, until we figured out that you have to get there before 8 a.m. and put a towel on the chaise lounges and table to claim them. Otherwise they’re gone for the whole day. That kind of ruined our stay, and the pool situation could be managed better.
We ended up waiting on the sand for more than an hour and a half to see the sunset after our chairs were taken away before dusk so they could be locked up. The staff were nice, and the place itself was great.
Everything was clean and fun. Lady b came over by the pool to braid our hair, and she was quick and did a great job. She brought clean combs, clips, and detangler with her. If you need to get in touch with her,
