Being right next to the elevator makes unloading groceries, belongings, and beach gear easy, especially with the moving carts. The building is well maintained, and even when construction was going on, we didn’t mind because we’re early risers and spend most of the day at the beach or out. The owner gave us an irresistible deal then, too. We’ve been coming to Emerald Isle Unit 612 since 2014, and it really has become our family’s beach home away from home. Our kids were babies when we started, and now they’re 7, 9, and 11. We’ve tried other units over the years, and my parents rent their own when they visit, but we keep choosing the same owner for the clean, contemporary, modern style. It’s a nice change from the overly multicolored or beach decorated look you often see elsewhere. The kids love the unusual triple bunk setup, with two twins on top and a queen below. We haven’t seen another 2 bedroom, 2 bath layout like it. As they’ve gotten older, they like sharing a room while having their own TV and closet space. I used to sleep on the bottom bunk with the youngest while the others piled onto the top. Lots of great memories. After all these years, it still feels as special as our first visit. We can’t imagine staying anywhere else on Okaloosa for such great value.

The fridge was good and the HVAC was adequate, though airflow was limited in some areas. The unit itself felt decades out of date, with old carpet and fabric furniture, and a moldy drop ceiling in the kitchen, probably with more mold above it. That’s the last thing you want in a beach rental. I’d read there were two pools, but there’s only one. Beach access is all stairs, so if you have a wagon or other wheeled gear, plan to go about a quarter mile on the other side of the street to the nearest municipal access with a ramp.

The best part was being close to the beach, though getting there meant going up several stairs and through the pool area. With our beach carts, I wish someone had told us about that. The pool was nice but small and crowded. The condo felt old and not updated, with an odd smell, ceiling water damage, stained carpet, and outdated appliances. It felt more like staying at grandma’s house than in a beach condo. Construction crews were everywhere from 7:30 in the morning, and we couldn’t use the balcony or open the curtains because men were working outside the windows the whole time. I found that out the hard way when I walked out of the shower in a towel and saw a man staring at me through the bedroom window. It scared me to death. You’d think the owners would have given more warning. On our last day, the crew roped off the handicap ramp and blocked the elevator. We won’t be back. I’d pay over $1,000 for a much nicer place on the beach.
