Best Western Historic Frederick

We were glad this was only a one-night stay. The queen beds were too hard for me, the heater was LOUD, and the TV remote didn't work properly. Breakfast was bland despite the waffle station, and the scrambled eggs were overcooked. The staff at breakfast around 6 a.m. also left me wishing BW's regional managers would stop by unannounced to see what's going on. I considered taking a photo, but decided against it. I won't be back to this Best Western. There were a few positives: the fridge was a good size, Wi-Fi was free, the price was inexpensive, and downtown Frederick was less than 10 minutes away. But the room's bathroom was basically a toilet and shower squeezed into a small closet, while the sink sat in the main room beside an open coat closet with no door. Our bathroom door wouldn't close all the way. The place also had no elevator, which would make stairs difficult with heavy bags or for anyone with mobility limits.

For a night off the road, this place worked well, and it's handy to both US-15 and I-70. The staff were friendly and breakfast was great. The rooms are a little small, and the bathroom could use an update, but they're fine for the price. I'd stay again when passing through Frederick.

For about $82, it wasn't a terrible stay, and I've slept in much worse hotels. The place was fairly clean and conveniently located near the freeway, but it could use some improvements. It was around 24 degrees outside, yet my bed had no blanket or comforter, just bedding suited to summer. I realized too late at night how cold I was, and turning the heat up to about 78 still didn't quite warm me enough. The bathroom and sink lights had also stopped working, as if a breaker had tripped, so I had to shower and use the sink in the dark.

The only thing this place really has going for it is how close it is to downtown. Calling it “Historic” feels like a way of saying old, rundown, and gross. The first room smelled strongly of cigarette smoke, was dirty, and had an unmade bed. When I told the front desk, the response was just “that’s weird,” with no apology, before we were moved to another room. At least that one didn't smell of smoke and the bed was made, but the tub and shower were filthy, with grime and gunk in the cracks and a badly yellowed curtain. The fridge hadn't been cleaned, the sheets and blanket had black lint and dirt on them, and there was a strange brown ceiling stain. The air conditioner barely worked. The bed was unbelievably hard, the pillows were small and poor, and people slammed doors in the noisy hallways. Breakfast was bad too. There were only two cereals, no fresh fruit, and the milk for cereal sat out in a pitcher. The eggs, sausage, and biscuits with gravy all had odd textures and didn't taste good. The waffle maker was honestly the best part, though the yogurt came from a strange machine. The sitting area was small, and there was no elevator, so be prepared for the stairs if you have heavy bags or a disability.
