The noise around and above our second room kept us awake. It smelled even more strongly of cigarettes and weed than the first one. That room was usable, but hardly comfortable. I thought about asking the front desk to send security, but after everything else, I doubted they had enough basic staff, let alone anyone for security after hours. The first room was filthy and badly run down. There was mud, rubbish, and rusty plumbing debris all over the bathroom floor. The sink emptied onto the floor, and the tub was full of trash, so I didn't even try the shower. The carpet was old and dirty, and the whole place smelled as if people had been smoking in it for years. My wife and I were rushing to an event in this "lovely" part of Virginia, so we changed quickly and left with our bags. Getting the keys took well over 20 minutes, despite having booked weeks ahead. Then we had to drive around to the far side of the building to reach the room. Maybe that would make sense for a large convention center if nearby rooms were occupied, but I doubt they keep track of which rooms are available. We were in such a rush that we pushed through and went to the event. At about 4 a.m., we heard a rat or some animal of similar size scurrying across the carpet. We fumbled for the lights and found both bedside lamp bulbs were out. We packed up and left right then, never to return. Once home, we checked for fleas and bed bugs and put all the clothes we'd brought through a hot wash as a precaution. I've traveled enough to be on my third passport and feel I've seen some of the best and worst lodging, at home and abroad. This stands out as one of the worst hotel stays I can remember. I considered asking for a refund, but figured COVID was behind the neglect and indifferent management, and would rather forget the whole ordeal. Still, fellow travelers should avoid Clarion Convention Center in Fredericksburg. Old and run down is one thing, but this felt plainly unsafe.

I was disappointed that we couldn't reach the front desk using any of three phones and had to drive around the building to report the problem. The first thing they asked was, “Did you take pictures?” Seriously? I was just tired. The room hadn't been cleaned: the beds were unmade with no sheets or blankets, and there were dog food pellets on the bathroom floor. The floors hadn't been cleaned either. I gave an extra star for the kind staff, especially the gentleman who took an interest and went to look at the original room himself. We were moved to a neat room with made beds. The hotel's under renovation, and the pictures at the front entry make the future facility look sensational. The location is great, and we may try it again after the work is done.

The bed was awful, with every spring easy to feel, and the water temperature couldn't be controlled. There were hairs on every towel, bugs in the room, and no housekeeping at all during our three-day stay. The furnishings were dated and the rooms poorly kept. WiFi was a joke, and only a quarter of the TV channels worked. This place is old, dingy, and in bad shape. The halls stank of cigar smoke, cigarettes, marijuana, you name it. The bar, restaurant, and pool were all closed. We paid $100 a night, and it wasn't worth $30. We won't come back. Spend your hard-earned money somewhere else.

The room was nice and had a balcony. The stay felt good, though a little eerie, kind of like an old haunted mansion. I'd definitely stay again. My only gripe is that they still serve breakfast in bags.

A mouse was in our room, and the customer service was horrible. During my five-night stay, they charged a $25.00 incidental fee three separate times. On the sixth day, after I paid the current rate of 86.00 for the night, they told me I also owed for the night before. I said I had already paid, and that the person I paid was her, the manager. I asked her not to rip me off, and she called the cops. The officers came, confirmed that I'd paid for the previous day, gave me all six receipts, and acknowledged that I'd paid for the current night too. The manager still wanted me off the property, so I had 30 minutes to pack and leave, without the $86.00, of course. This hotel and its employees made the stay miserable. There's no customer service, and they'll steal your money.
