Moody Gardens Hotel, Spa and Convention Center

We went home a day early because I couldn't deal with the experience, and I wouldn't return to the hotel or restaurant. I expected convenience, comfort, and a relaxing vacation, especially traveling with a baby, but it was the opposite. The shared microwave was so dirty I couldn't comfortably heat the baby's milk or food. Valet was frustrating too. I understand the $30 fee, but getting the car or even someone to take the keys took forever. Waiting 15 minutes for the car with a baby was stressful. Restaurant service was also extremely slow, nearly an hour for a burger. The staff were friendly and polite, but the hotel seemed very short-staffed, making the whole stay difficult rather than relaxing.

Room service was quick and polite, and there was plenty of tasty food. The gardens are nice to wander around, and several Galveston attractions are within walking distance, including the water park, ropes courses, aquarium, natural history pyramids, and the Colonel steam boat, though the boat is unfortunately shut down.

Hazel at the front desk made a point of finding me a quiet room and even brought me birthday cake. That kindness set the tone for a really relaxing stay. I’ve loved Moody Gardens since visiting the Rainforest Pyramid as a kid, and now I get to bring our children to the Aquarium, Palm Beach, and Holiday in the Garden events. This birthday staycation was wonderful from check-in through checkout, and everything exceeded what I expected. After my spa massage, I came back to a tidied room with the extra pillows I’d asked for. As a working mom of three, having a clean, thoughtfully arranged space helped me unwind. I also spent time by the pool listening to the waterfall, and the spa’s calm atmosphere was just what I needed. Dinner at Shearn’s was glorious. We started with wine in the bar, where the waitress helped us choose a bottle and took a lovely photo. The maître d’ welcomed us with classic Galveston charm, and Mark was personable and knew the menu well. He made sure the meal went smoothly. The hotel was getting ready for several events, including the Epicurean Evening we attended and thoroughly enjoyed, but the attentive service didn’t slip even during that busy stretch. Every staff member I met was genuinely friendly and helpful. We left with a memorable birthday stay, and I’m looking forward to recommending Moody Gardens to friends and family. It’s earned a loyal guest in me.

The rooms were roomy and nice, the buffet was good for the price compared with similar hotels, and the pool and kids’ activities were great. But the service was poor for what the rooms cost, and we won’t be coming back. We arrived on a Friday afternoon, with a crowd and a line stretching out the driveway. The staff out front seemed unprepared, and nobody was helping guests unload. People were bringing their own luggage to carts one at a time. We chose valet and waited several minutes before someone asked if we needed a cart. They brought one over and walked away, leaving us to unload our own bags in the valet line. At the desk, the staff also seemed caught off guard by a group checking in. They were disorganized and unfriendly. We had booked three rooms, and after taking a long time to find our confirmation numbers, they told us to get back in line for the second and third reservations. We politely said no, and the employee got even testier. I’d usually ask a manager to resolve things before writing a review this negative, but we don’t plan to return.
