The elk herd seemed to live in the area, and we saw it on the property every day. It was also a bonus that Shawn watched our dog at her house for an additional fee while we took a day trip to old faithful. We were away for seven hours and didn’t have to worry about the dog. The Lookout cabin had comfortable beds and pillows, and soft sheets were welcome after long days. The house was stocked with cooking basics, and having laundry on site helped. Gardiner and the Yellowstone park entrance are a very short drive away. We enjoyed it so much that we added a fifth night. Shawn answered all my questions and recommended a horse riding outfit. We’d shopped ahead in Livingston, but were pleasantly surprised by the prices and selection at the Gardiner store. We’ll stay here again when we come back to Yellowstone.

Bernie absolutely loved Bailey and Shawn at Little Trail Creek pet boarding. The cabins look nice too, and this seems like a great, quiet place to get away and enjoy Yellowstone.

The view from the property is stunning, and there are lots of excellent hikes in the nearby Gallatin National Forest, including right outside the back door. I spent four weeks here in August 2025 and enjoyed it so much that I’m coming back next summer. Lookout Cabin was beautifully furnished and decorated, and Shawn has thought of everything you might need for a Montana vacation. Shawn and Jim live on the property and are lovely hosts who are easy to reach if you need anything. The location is fabulous, just 10 minutes from the north entrance to Yellowstone National Park. I highly recommend Little Trail Creek Cabins for a Montana or Yellowstone adventure.

The property was beautiful, with horses just outside the window and gorgeous mountains all around. Sage cabin was incredibly comfortable, with great beds and just about everything we could think of, from bear spray and sunscreen to all the kitchen items we needed. The location was ideal too, only 7 minutes from Yellowstone and 5 minutes from Gardiner, so it had a great mix of convenience and peaceful scenery. We absolutely loved our stay and would definitely come back.

The quiet setting, morning elk in the yard, and feeding the horses each day were all highlights for us. Jim and Shawn were wonderful hosts, and their house is beautiful, with very comfortable beds and a kitchen and bathroom stocked so well that packing was easier. After days exploring Yellowstone, our son liked logging onto the TV in the evenings. We also tried the meals Shawn and Jim offer: ham and beans and elk stew. Our son called the ham and beans the best meal he’d ever had and said, “The best cooks in Montana are here!” The North Entrance to Yellowstone is less than 10 minutes away, which was hard to beat. About the cancellation complaints: if you cancel within a week of your stay, you lose your money unless you bought insurance. A remote corner of Montana takes advance vacation planning, and owners can’t be expected to cover canceled rooms when there’s almost no chance of renting them again at the last minute. We’re absolutely coming back to stay with Shawn and Jim, and we’ve already recommended them to friends and family.
