Super 8 Glencoe

We didn't even get into our room until midnight, after a family event, and it was filthy: open door, dirty towels piled up, unmade beds, a paper plate on the floor, open fridge and microwave, a used washcloth in the shower, and something on the floor by the open toilet. The front desk was impossible to reach by dialing 0, so we had to shout toward the back office. We were eventually moved to a room with a broken lock. Staff said they'd credit the room, but at checkout only the housekeeper was there, couldn't use the computer or give us a receipt, and wrote down my details for the manager. After I called back, the manager gave us just $10. This was the worst hotel stay I've had, and I won't return. No guest should have to deal with this. The room arrangements were a mess from the start. Our original booking was confirmed for Queen rooms, but no confirmation email came through, so I called to request them again. When I later changed the reservation, I had to ask for Queen rooms again. At check-in we still didn't get all of them, and ended up with a double because the other available rooms had a broken lock and a broken heater.

Our room was clean enough, but it wasn't ready when we arrived at 2:30, even though check-in was listed as starting at 1. We had a wedding to get to within the hour and needed time to change, so being unapologetically offered the lobby restroom was pretty frustrating. We'd been included in a wedding room block arranged months earlier, which makes the lack of preparation hard to excuse. Also, the business center has a computer that's 15 years old and doesn't even have a monitor.

The staff have stayed courteous, but the place has been slipping every time I've visited. The comforters had several big stains, and the coffee's half-and-half has been replaced with a packet of whitener. I don't know why the description used to advertise an indoor outdoor pool, since there isn't one. I saw the pool amenity had been removed by 05/31/18, which is a small step in the right direction. I've stayed here several times, and the only thing this "8" has going for it is its friendly staff. There's nothing Super about it.

The room was clean, the AC worked well, and the internet was fast. There's a family diner right next door, and the hotel is easy to get to. Breakfast was only so-so, though, and this older Super 8 needs more than new curtains and paint. I noticed several patched spots on the walls, and the hallway smelled moldy while what looked like water damage was being repaired. Security concerned me most. The sign said the north outside door would be locked at night, but it wasn't. My room door wouldn't latch unless I lifted it by the handle. Once, the front desk started opening my door because another guest was confused about her room location. They should have checked before trying to open doors.
